R1, G1: sens @ Maple Leafs - Apr. 20th, 7:00pm - SN, Fan 590

of course. Ottawa had the puck more tonight, but they rarely felt dangerous with it. A few good chances that stood out, but the rest was all outside.
It is like they haven't watched the Leafs throughout much of the season ... especially since their .741 stretch after Four Nations Cup. That is how they have been playing. Have to wonder how some on Sportsnet keep their jobs

If they're going to go deep, they have to avoid exhaustive first rounds against teams they should beat and stay healthy.
Tonight was a very good first step towards doing that.

This one gives a lot of credit to Laughton and OEL, and rightly so, but the play is started in his own end by Lorentz and then he crashes the back post to pull Ullmark's attention. Jarnkrok attacks the other post in similar fashion and it's quite the conundrum.

Chef's kiss on the finish. Everyone expects Marner to try to dangle it in. He's tried this simple move a few times before to reasonable success.

I have nothing to add. Standard Nylander no-looker from the slot.

This was a very different game 1

PP is hot from the start, PK was also good. The core 4 produced at least 2 points each.

Ottawa took very stupid cross checks to the head penalties, wondering if that will turn to be something by players safety.

Anyway, keep up Leafs! Go Leafs Go!!!

The thing is that any of the softer calls were still penalties.

1) Tanev hit from behind. Tanev turned his back. Stutzle sees his back turned and continues into the check and elevates with his hit. It's probably not a penalty in Game 7 and its certainly not a penalty in the later rounds, but Game 1-3 are usually called a lot softer.

2) Grieg crosscheck. I still don't really understand how that isn't a 5 minute penalty. At the very least I think the NHL should look at a 2 minute modifier for hits to the head. That was way worse than a high stick that barely makes someones lip bleed. 2 minutes for the crosscheck and 2 minutes for the head hit at least.

3) The Matthews hit. Definitely soft but again, two hands on the stick and a shove into the hip/back.

4) Batherson trip...it was a slew foot. He tried to get ahead of him up high and his leg was behind Jarnkrok's leg when he pulled past him. Those trips are usually called

5) Batherson crosscheck to OEL. It was away from the play. Crosschecks stop being penalties later in the series but Ottawa was doing it all night and probabably had about 10% of their crosschecks be called. You have to be smarter. The Leafs struggled to learn that lesson against Boston/Tampa for years.

6) Kleven high stick. Highsticking and puck over the glass are the two penalties that get called consistenly.

7) The 12 penalties taken with a minute left. The game was over. Ottawa turned an insignificant high stick from Robertson into a line brawl.

8) Hightower tackkling and punching Holmberg.

Maybe 2 of the 6 penalties are soft but they were all penalties. The Leafs struggled with this stuff for years. The Leafs have progressively gotten dirtier over time at playing playoff style hockey. This was a lesson for the Senators.

I think at 5 on 5 they matched up fine and at times I didn't like how the Leafs played but this win reaffirmed to me that this would be a disaster if the Leafs don't win this series.

Rielly's pizza served to Brady... come on man, not to that guy, not at that time. I am glad we don't need him 24 minutes per game this year.

23/24 playoffs averaged 24.50 minutes per game, just 18.07 minutes game 1.

Knies ice time, the most on the team!

Some big differences this playoffs: Knies, JT beast mode, Rielly ice time down, better D, forward depth, exceptional goaltending, and a 9 point game 1 output from the core 4.

Overall, I don't think the Leafs brought their A game last night. They still played well and definitely had the better chances through the first 40, but they didn't take control of the game like they are capable of doing when they really click. They gave up more in the 3rd, but part of the was score effect/game management, especially after Rielly's goal.

That being said, their B game is still better than most of the league - evidenced by their 4th overall finish in the standings (with the 2nd most wins and ROW), despite infrequently showing their true A game. Both teams have room to improve and if the Leafs up their game just a little and Ottawa struggles to get over their playoff inexperience/jitters, this could be a quicker series than most were expecting
