I don’t see how any of those moves are thinking he’s outsmarting the league anymore than any other GM. It seems like people project things onto him.

I see this mentioned all the time re: Dubas but what evidence is there he thought he was “outsmarting the league”? And also, wouldn’t every GM think they’re making smart moves against the rest of the league? Is it because he had glasses?

Yeah I think it’s a bit revisionist because Kapanen/Johnsson didn’t continue to be/improve to be the players we all thought they were going to be. At the time it was thought that the Leafs paid a late 1st round pick for $6.25M in cap space and were able to re-sign younger players like Kapanen...

I wish people would stop using the Mrazek trade as an example of poor asset management. They moved down, what, 13 spots in the draft and drafted Fraser Minten with the pick. There’s basically no draft pick value difference in the spots and Minten looks as good or better than anyone picked...

Completely disagree. They never controlled play vs Florida and largely haven’t since Berube was hired. Can say all you want about grit and toughness, but it is basically impossible to win the Cup without being one of the top teams at controlling the play. Scoring chances at 5v5 in that series...

A big part of the issue in firing Dubas is that it (1) seemed like a rash decision and (2) there was no in depth GM search undertaken to find the best candidate.

How Berube has a rep as a defensive wizard is beyond me.

Whole league is moving this way but Treliving does this.

This was an issue last season too and they didn’t address it whatsoever. In fact, by losing Marner it only made it worse.

Reality is this team, with a pretty favourable schedule to start the season, is pretty much average to below average in almost every underlying category except for SH%. Their PK is average and the PP has been bad. Unless something changes, this team has played like an average-to-below average...

In their last 3 seasons with that GM/coach combo the Leafs were the 5th best overall team in takeaways/60. I don’t know where this narrative comes that they weren’t good at getting pucks back.

I feel like this years is a lot easier? Last season 8 of those 13 were playoff teams. How many of these teams do you think are going to make the playoffs at the end of the season? I’d be hard pressed to say more than 3 of them.

I’m skeptical he can repeat that 23-24 season (he did shoot 21%) but hopefully last season was more the recovery issue.
