A good look at the current playoff race, via Damian Echevarrieta, vice president of Player Safety and Hockey Operations (@Ech28).

The Leafs path to the playoffs will either be through the 3rd spot in the Atlantic or through the 2nd Wild Card spot. If they get into the Atlantic spot they'll play whoever finishes 2nd between Montreal and Ottawa. If they go through the Wild Card it's whoever finishes 1st between Washington/Pittsburgh/Columbus. Obviously going through the Atlantic would be the preferred option as it would also give us an easier 2nd round opponent should we make it that far. One thing to keep in mind though: Boston will almost certainly have the tie-breaker between us so we would need to pass them outright in points.

The Leafs remanining schedule looks pretty promising, right up until that final week when we play 5 games in 7 days. Obviously, trying to bank points prior to that will be very important. The Leafs, Islanders, and Lightning all play 7 games in their final 11 days of the season though so all 3 teams will be on even ground there.

Easier being a relative term, of course, as that 2nd round opponent is still likely to be one of Wash/Pitts/CBJ/NYR - though, the winner of 2/3 in the Atlantic would have home ice advantage in that scenario, despite quite possibly finishing more than 10 points behind the team they're facing.

We're rolling into Florida where a lot of their key players on in the infirmary. There's a good chance to bank some points now to buffer some of the tougher matchups coming up.

Florida just lost Ekblad to a concussion (same with Malgin), and Luongo is still out, so it'll be Reimer tomorrow. He's been one of the best 5v5 goalies since Dec 1, but has been pretty bad against us this year.

Tampa has basically lost all their starting centres: Johnson, Namestnikov, and Pacquette all went down to injury on Saturday. We will likely see Byron Froese on Thursday as he was just called up this morning.

It's pretty crazy what happened to Tampa. Lose 3 centres to injury in one game just a week or so after trading 2 centres away at the deadline.

It's got to be a function of whatever Voodoo deal Yzerman pulled in the off season to trick everyone into signing at team friendly prices. There are no free lunches.

You'd think the Stamkos injury would have covered that. Which of course reminds me, that means Tampa is currently without SIX centres that they started the season with. Imagine that happened to the Leafs?

Yeah, we would've traded off Polak and Hunwick and Komarov, maybe played Laich/Greening enough to deal them at the deadline for something nominal, and then drafted Liljegren+  :'(

Take care of business down in FLA/TB hopefully, we'll see at home against CHI on Saturday (St.Pats gear :D), and then Monday against BOS is YUGE.

Isles lose (TO remains in the 2nd wildcard spot), but Tampa wins (now both the Isles and Tampa are nipping at our heels).

Whew, Tampa has awoken. Showdowns with them and Boston in the next 7 days. Those pivotal games will mean a lot.

              GR  PTS
Boston    13    80
Toronto    15    76
--------------------
NY Isles    14    75
Tampa      14    75

A Maple Leafs/Canadiens playoff opening round matchup is something I would be looking forward to, much more than if they faced the Capitals or the Penguins or even the Blue Jackets.

A Toronto/Montreal tilt would be our version of a Stanley Cup Final type of playoff of two teams with so much history between them.

A Maple Leafs/Senators opening playoff matchup would top the above-mentioned in terms of pure emotional supremacy, as has been the case over the years of intense rivalry between these two.

So, take your picks.  (*keeping fingers crossed*)

I think Ottawa can take the division over Montreal, and that means the Leafs would have to overtake Boston for that first round Habs-Leafs playoff.  That would be something.  Anything can happen at this point.

Additional grist for the mill:
It is a tough schedule on paper with few ?easy? games, but the Leafs are actually a cumulative 15-4-3 against their remaining opponents so far this season. Seven of the next 11 games will be played on the road before a four-game homestand against Washington, Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh and Columbus to close out the season. Nothing can be taken for granted.

Go Flames Go. Could use a little help/11th straight win.

Leafs' loss on Tuesday combined with Boston's win last night likely puts passing the Bruins out of reach for the Leafs.
