2025-26 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

I can see that. I hope it's not the case because I still hold some hope that he finds a way to stick in the lineup and his value is always going to be higher to the Leafs if he figures that out than trading him.
I'm not itching to see Robertson go but I just don't see where he fits. He's not playing on the top line. He doesn't make a ton of sense on the Tavares-Nylander line given that they'll prioritize either a playmaker (Maccelli/Domi) or a forechecker (McMann/Joshua) as the 3rd player over another shooter. And he's not going to play on a 3rd line that's going to get completely opposite usage than it did last season.

So I mean that leaves a 4th line with Laughton and one of Lorentz/Pezzetta/Jarnkrok. Maybe he can do some offensive damage along two grinders but obviously his minutes would be limited.

MLHS quote:

The best thing we can say right now about the top-six shift is that at least Pontus Holmberg was removed as an option.

You'll be reading a lot of sentences like that this season: lots of analysis that is much ado about very little.

Cap Wages has some handy data (sometimes wrong) showing how teams acquire the players in their line up.

Leafs 2025 roster
ForwardDefenseGoalie
Draft411
Trade430
UFA731

Robertson is counted here (draft); Joshua is counted as trade.

That is a real interesting thought process

Overspeed drills do similar. Do things at hyper speed and max effort. So, when it's time to perform in a real game, everything slows down and you can process easily

I like this. Adds on top of the muscle memory too, which gives more overhead for processing.

This is all I could think of when Keefe said “When teams play the Leafs, they set up the game for the Leafs to beat themselves”

This biggest issue with the team is they don't know the in between. They're either slow and methodical or 100% dump and chase. As soon as this team loses momentum in the playoffs, they immediately revert to dump and "sort of chase". They need to develop a "chip and overwhelm" methodology. Put the puck to open ice where you have the best chance of winning the race, or in the least, overwhelming the D and causing a turnover.

Yeah, some of them are stupid at dumping, and not everyone was super committed to chasing. It will be very beneficial to have both a ground/run/chase and air/pass/possess game to flip between as the situation and matchup calls for.
