Mango deserves his own thread. Welcome to the big-time.

I can see Johnsson being a little more reasonable with his demands then Kappi will probably be.  Took a flyer on a 7th round pick and have been instrumental in his development.  He seems to love being a Leaf.
Lets hope so.

If we're just talking contract, who says we can't? Next contract will most likely be a bridge deal. He's not hitting a home run yet with only 1 good year. Leafs have other people they can move to get cash. If you had to choose who are you picking? Hyman or Johnsson? Same with Brown, Johnsson. Choice is easy for me. Johnsson and Kappy can do what Hyman and Brown do with a lot more offensive touch. You can't be paying a checker,(one dimensional player) 2+ mill, just like you can't pay a 4th line guy that kind of coin. That's 4.35 between the 2. Kadri at 4.5mill could also be moved if necessary as Willy seems to be doing well at centre. Lots of options. Marleau is off the books after next year. Muzzin could be to if Lilypad and Sandin are ready. Hainsey is gone after this. Leafs will have to prioritize who's more valuable.

Johnsson now or someone else later. The realities of a salary cap are that you don't get to keep everyone you want.

By the end of the season, he'll have played around NHL 80 games and managed about .6 ppg.

Burtch compares him to Viktor Arvidson who signed for 7 years at $4.25m (5.67%). Also comparable, and with contracts more similar to what Johnsson's likely to see, are Conor Sheary (3 x 3m = 4% cap) and Tyler Johnson (3 x $3.333m = 4.83% cap). Kyle Connor and Danton Heinan are in a similar class, and still on their ELCs.

So something like $3.333m to $4m on an $83m cap.

Maybe they can keep him if they move out Brown and Zaitsev... but probably not both him and Kapanen.

I doubt the Leafs will try to sign either Kapanen or Johnsson to multi-year deals. I think they'll get fairly small one year deals with the implicit promise that next year, when the Leafs have more cap room, they'll get those sorts of offers.

That said, I still think you're overestimating what he'll get even then.

Although that raises an interesting question. Could the Leafs sign Johnsson to a one year, 1m dollar deal on July 1st and then on July 2nd sign him to a 3 year, 11 million dollar extension with, say, enough bonus money that it's effectively a 4 year/12 million dollar deal?

Players who sign a 1-year contract aren't eligible to sign an extension until January 1st.

Alright, but still effectively yes if it's just an "agreement".

That seems like one of those grey areas in the CBA, but yeah probably. What I don't think they could do though is have the signing bonus money from the second contract paid out anytime during the first contract (which I think is what you were saying they should do).

No, I was just sort of thinking about giving a suspiciously large bonus on day one of the second contract that, to an outside observer, might give the impression they were paying him for the year he just played.

a huge challenge with Johnsson is that he has arbitration rights. Moreover, he signed his QO rather than try to negotiate a longer deal.  He ?bet on himself? and looks to be winning that bet. To me, that doesnt look like a guy ready to put himself at risk a second year in a row and do significant favors for the team.

It's going to be pretty simple for both Johnsson and Kapanen though. Sign a 1 or 2 year bridge deal or you're traded.
