Asking price for Tyler Bozak appears to be a second round pick

I'll be surprised if he's worth a 2nd considering his salary/modest productivity, however since there was going to be some sort of bidding war when TO last signed him I'm hoping those teams will line up to trade with TO, doubtful.

bye bye bozak....if someone offers a second you jump all over it.  Dubas should be driving him to the airport

The thing with Bozak though is that you could legitimately make the argument that he's more valuable the less term he has. So unlike a guy like Kessel or Phaneuf, there might be legitimate reason to keep him around. I don't know what he'd ever get much more valuable than a 2nd but I don't think there's the urgency to move him there maybe should be for others.

I'd fly over to Canada and shake his hand and bid him farewell.

The problem with Bozi is that it was reported that he had adopted Phil's work ethic without Phil's talent, meaning last on the ice, first off.
Babcock will want him gone.

Is it possible to link that report?  I hadn't seen it.  Would be interested to hear more.

I believe Bozak signed prior to FA so how there was supposedly going to be a bidding, I couldn't understand, I think TO simply overpaid by bidding against itself.

I don't have a problem with Bozak, he is what he is but he's been misused and overpaid since the new contract. I hope he's actually a quality 3rd line center, better than Smith or Holland, so keeping him would be an option except he's way overpaid by about 1.7 mil. per.

Way overpaying for marginal talent is not a winning formula in the cap era, TO needs a far more proper $ management plan(s) because the all mighty $ is the potential superstar on any roster.

Bozak's contract is that of a mediocre second line center. A good third line center will go for at least 3 million or so on the open market.

Bozak probably got more term than was deserved but he's not grossly overpaid.

Hard to say how he'd perform as a 2nd line C with 2nd line C minutes, 2nd line wingers, and not 1 PP time.  His overall offensive numbers are propped up by virtue of playing with two Olympic-calibre offensive players.  Maybe it would be offset by facing weaker D competition.

If I was another team I'd be wary about what I'd really be getting since Bozak has almost exclusively played with Kessel and then Kessel/JVR since he's been in the league.  His defensive play is pretty poor at 5v5 but he's shown that he can at least not necessarily hinder someone like Kessel's ability to put up points.

Let's not get crazy with interested...

That report comes courtesy of that bastion of credibility, Steve Simmons. Oh, and some unnamed Leafs' executive of course

KESSEL DRAGGING DOWN BOZAK?

What happened to that nice kid who used to be Tyler Bozak?

That?s a question the Maple Leafs are asking themselves as the NHL trade deadline approaches and the future of the club needs to be directed.

Those around the Leafs have seen a change in Bozak this year and it isn?t for the better. It?s partly his play, but just as much are his habits at practice, off the ice and in the dressing room.

?It?s OK to be first off the ice at practice every day when you have Phil Kessel?s freakish gifts,? a Leafs executive said. ?But when you?re second off the ice at practice every day and you don?t have those gifts, what are you doing? Why aren?t you working on your game??

This is among the reasons the Leafs would like to rid themselves of Kessel. He is different and works differently than most NHL stars. If it works for him, so be it and most of the time it has. But when it begins to influence others, negatively ? Bozak has also turned into an interview malcontent when once he was a reasonable subject ? then the Leafs realize why they must move him in a rebuilding time.

The Leafs expected Kessel to be that way because he has always been that way. They didn?t expect it from Bozak, the one-time humble free agent who club officials worry is lost in his own self-importance.

If only Bozak had been 8th off the ice.

Oh man, this is golden:

The media do a wonderful job of running a bully culture and the. Crying woe is me when the players don't kiss their rear ends down the road.  I honestly hate the Toronto media so much.  More than I hate the Leafs for their poor effort last year.

Okay, thanks for taking the time to post that.  :)  I appreciate it.

Could he be more valuable at the Trade Deadline perhaps?  A 2nd rounder is good but a late first or 2nd round + is better and I wonder if he can fetch that at the trade deadline when there is more urgency to win by teams who are in contention.

Nobody is going to trade much for a guy 2nd off the ice at practice who isn't BFF's with local media.  Got to trade him now before it gets worse.

To put things in perspective, I found a piece by Mirtle (an actual journalist) from last March.  Where he talks about Bozak coming into his own and silencing his critics.  It's full of bits from teammates saying what a wonderful guy he is, and what a great player.  Heck, even McDavid hopes to one day play the game like Bozak.  ;D

It's so hard to look at things objectively in this market, but it sure is a fun ride sometimes.  I think you're right, that he could be a better prize at the trade deadline.  Especially if he can improve his defensive play under Babcock, and keep up a 50+ faceoff win percentage.  He might be an attractive option for someone looking to make a run in the playoffs, especially a team with injuries.

Edit:  That being said, I hope they move him today.

I guess they can't all be Jonas Siegel or James Mirtle...  :-\

I think it would depend on how much his contract is seen as an impediment.  Antoine Vermette got a late 1st and a prospect.  He was a rental.  I don't know if that would increase or decrease his value at the trade deadline.

His value is not likely to improve enough to offset the year of development time lost by waiting, and you also run the risk of him really being exposed for what he is if Kessel is moved. His value is probably near its highest right now.
