Game Notes

COL
?Jonathan Bernier (13-7-1, 2.61 GAA, .919 Sv%) will likely start for the Avalanche
?Bernier has been on an absolute tear since taking over the net from the injured Varlamov. He's started and won 8 straight games and has a 1.46 GAA and .958 Sv% since Varlamov went down
?Since Matt Duchene was traded away, Nathan MacKinnon leads all NHLers in points with 45 in 31 games. The next highest scorer since that time is Tavares with 39 points in 34 games. MacKinnon's now 2nd in the league in points, just 2 back of Kucherov
?Largely because of the play of MacKinnon and Bernier, the Avs find themselves in the final wild card spot in the West right now. Looks like they "wanted to play playoff hockey" as well
?Samuel Girard.

TOR
?Andersen (23-13-4, 2.68 GAA, .920 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
?Still waiting word on Rielly's status for the game but his injury is not believed to be severe so he shouldn't be out long
?A big game from Marner and a 41-ish% CF night for the JVR-Bozak-Brown line on Saturday might be enough to get Mitch back into the top-9, again we have to wait and see

Injuries

?Semyon Varlamov - Groin - Injured Reserve
?Colin Wilson - Flu - Questionable Monday
?Sven Andrighetto - Leg - Injured Reserve
?Tyson Barrie - Hand - Injured Reserve
?Vladislav Kamenev - Arm - Injured Reserve
?Sergei Boikov - Shoulder - Injured Reserve
Code:

?Nathan Horton - Back - Out indefinitely
?Joffrey Lupul - Actually Injured - Out indefinitely
?Nikita Soshnikov - Groin - Injured Reserve
?Nikita Zaitsev - Lower Body - Injured Reserve
?Morgan Rielly - Arm - Questionable Monday

So I guess we have to accept that Gardiner is just going to gardiner it up on a regular basis.

I'm surprised after 6+ years here people are expecting any different?

Also it's worth noting that Nail is on the 2nd line of a team whose record is as good as ours.  Maybe he isn't done after all.

Maybe the last 2 are a surprise.  Prior to that, people thought, hey, maybe with more experience he'll stop giving the coach the opportunity to tell the media he doesn't know what he's doing sometimes.

Bozak started 8 of his shifts in the OZ and 3 of his shifts in the DZ.  And still got rolled in terms of possession (along with Brown and JvR).  Without Marner on that line, those guys are in tough to transition the puck.  Of course, Marner on the 4th line helps GOAT and Martin to positive results.

Rielly out in my opinion is a good thing. He can take the time to heal, while at the same time we can see what we have in the three guys fighting for a spot.  Its make or break time for these three. As well it will be a telltale sign to see if a trade is needed for defense.

Whoops, one note I forgot to include in the GDT: that's former Leafs draft pick Dominic Toninato on Colorado's 4th line. Toronto didn't sign him after his NCAA career ended and the Avs plucked the 23-year old up in the summer. He was never a big scorer in his college career but he was known to be a very strong defensive forward. He has 12 points in 30 AHL games this season and 1 point in 10 NHL games.

Tough to say if he'll be in the NHL long-term or if he's only an AHL call-up when injuries strike, but I don't think too many Leafs fans had huge hopes for him so it's interesting he's getting some NHL playing time in his first professional season.

Hat trick for him for sure! ;)
