Bernier signs [2 years, 5.8M, 2.9M AAV]

If Riemer was an RFA this off season he could have got this type of salary. He signed his contract when he had 44 AHL games and 37 games of NHL experience. I don't think Riemer will see this as slight against him.

Nonis just put a damper on the one of the two offseason moves that I've liked so far. It's about a $1mil more than I was expecting. Not the end of the world though. I do think Bernier will be worth it, I just figured Nonis would get him cheaper.

I'm also a little worried about what this means for our other RFAs, particularly Kadri and Franson. I think they're going to get a little more than what I figured.

OK but what has Bernier done to deserve it? He only has 62 games in the NHL, and with the cup champs as well, stats are probably inflated a little bit.

About as much as Riemer has.

I won't get worked up over the half mil. or so less I thought he'd get. That said, all these 'slighty more than I thought he'd gets' eventually add up.  :-\

Basically the exact same amount that Reimer had done to earn 1.8 before he'd ever played a full season. Paying for potential didn't just get invented by Dave Nonis after 8 shots of Patron.

yikes.  how does Reimer feel.

Pretty much a large F-U. But thanks for the Playoffs Reimer...

Reimer's contract was signed two years ago and prices always go up. If Reimer signed today he'd probably be around the same number.

Well if he's anywhere near as good as some people think he'll be, it'll still be a cheap contract.

If not, it's only 2 years.

Its the classic "prove you're good enough" contract at two years. Not a huge cap hit overall for the goalies compared to teams with an established #1. Whoever comes out on top will get the big paycheck of 5+ when its all said and done. May be Reimer, may be Bernier, may be neither.

So we're at $10.87mil in cap space. That's with Holzer and Brennan as the 6th and 7th defencemen. Kadri, Franson, and Gunnarsson still need contracts. Plus two more bottom-6 forwards. I was banking on all 3 of our big RFAs to get an average of $3mil. Bernier's contract makes me think that's going to be a tad higher so things are going to get pretty tight unless Nonis swings another trade.

I think the hope is Bernier takes the jobs and runs and they deal Riemer as an RFA after this season.
