Bonus overages?

Now that Matthews has won the Calder and Marner has made the all rookie team shouldn't we have all of the information we need to calculate player bonuses for last year?

Did we go over the cap?  or not?

I see Cap Friendly has the Black Hawks over the cap for
next year due to overages.

Haven't been officially announced yet; whereas the Hawks was because their situation was already settled.

I expect that information should come out in the next couple days, and will hit the Leafs hard - capfriendly has the Leafs using $72.82M of the $73M available to them last season, and Matthews alone earned $2.8M in bonuses that are not included in that figure.

It was reported today that the Leafs were hit with $5.37 million in Bonus Overages.
Not sure about how all this plays out, but the Leafs have approximately $8 million tied up in 3 forwards, Lupul, Fehr and Smith (unless something happens in the interim), which one would think be enough to get Nylander under a long term deal and still have some money left to go towards bonuses of Matthews and Marner next year. And, there are other UFAs that could be moved, but of course that involves getting into some of the vets such as JVR, Bozak or Komorov. Horton LTIR ends one year after Matthews and Marner end their entry level deals. Wondering how the Leafs might be able to bridge some of that gap? I don't profess to be super schooled on cap legalities, so maybe someone might like to offer some insight?
Seems to me though Matthews probably projects like $9-10 million guy and maybe Marner and Nylander between $6-8 million depending on the seasons they have, and willingness to take hometown discounts. Shanny, Lou and company seem to be pretty savvy so far, so I trust they'll figure it out. Cap could also grow a bit over the next two years.

An MLSE exec will reach into the fat wallet of the company treasury and pull out some spare change to cover that.

Yeah, it's more about the cap implications though.

I'm cheering for Matthews to pull off an amazing season like McDavid did earning him 13.25Mi over 8 years.

They will figure it out.

I wonder if the team looks to dump the Lupul contract this offseason. Just the 1 season remaining on it. We'd need to toss in a draft pick as well but that might be worth it. It'd help avoid an overage this season, which in turn would also help avoid an overage in the 18/19 season.

If there was a side-deal to be had with Vegas, that might've been it. Steer for Fehr, send over Lupul, Rychel and our 2nd.

Hope for a flat cap the next couple years so our kids sign at a discount. Cap can grow after that. Cap grows, salaries grow according to the McDavid contract. Matthews, if he keeps progressing this way, is inline for a 8 digit contract for sure.

FYI cap should go way up considering what the CAD dollar is doing right now. Outlook for the loonie is good.

We should have packaged Leipsic with Lupul pre-draft and seen what came of that. Trade them to an Arizona or New Jersey or Carolina. Then have Vegas take their pick of Griffith/Leivo/Rychel. We weren't re-signing Griffith and we're going to lose one of Leivo or Rychel to waivers in October probably anyway.
