Coach Mike Babcock

As I predicted months ago, Mike Babcock is now the coach of our Toronto Maple Leafs!

Dreger reporting he has been hired. 8yr / 50 million

FriedgeHNIC: 8 years, maybe an out after five.

FriedgeHNIC: Front-loaded deal...high salary in first two years

FriedgeHNIC: May also have discussed Shanahan taking GM role, or Babcock/Shanahan having final say over personnel decisions.

Well, I suppose that's how you take out your, uh, doodle and throw it down on the table.

He also says

@FriedgeHNIC

To make this day even crazier, Guy Boucher is meeting with TOR. Assistant coach?

Curiouser and curiouser. Flexing that financial muscle?

I played it pretty cool before when I said I didn't care if we signed Babcock or not, but this is great. Especially if he's in it for the long-haul as his contract would suggest.

I wondered if they'd talk to Paul MacLean, who was an assistant under Babcock in Detroit. But that would be good too. Nobody will likely offer Boucher a head coach job right now. Get him as an assistant and maybe somebody pays you a 3rd rounder for him later. Genius.

Wow, I'm starting to get impressed with Shanahan.  I still think he pulled the trigger on a rebuild 1 year too late (losing out on McDavid/Eichel), but otherwise, he's made some good changes to the organization.

I wonder if that MLSE jet is flying Kessel and Phaneuf out of town now.

I'm pretty excited to see what Babcock can do on his end to turn this team around.  I would also like to have heard some of the conversations regarding Leaf player personnel.  He's seen this team enough to know at least who he doesn't want around next season.
