Deadline day thread

I'll make a prediction: at least one more "big" name from the core goes tomorrow.

Tomorrow will be the last potentially exciting day until the lottery. Here's hoping we get some stuff to talk about.

I'd guess Bozak is the most likely to be moved tomorrow, followed by Lupul. Maybe Booth. I don't see anyone really wanting Jokinen. Would like to see Phaneuf gone but figure he and Kessel are more likely to be summer deals.

Glencross goes for a  2nd and 3rd round picks in this year's draft. He's 32 and has 28 points this season and is a rental. That is some serious overpaying going on. I'm glad the Leafs held out with their bigger guns until draft day as a lot of expected pieces have already fallen. If teams who haven't done anything yet are in the market to keep up with the Joneses, there should be some decent offers coming the Leafs way tomorrow for some of these guys. I like to see the Leafs pick up another mid-to-high 1st rounder and a high 2 rounder, amongst other things. With Phaneuf, Bozak and Lupul all being dangled that may be doable?

Just heard Dreger talking about some possible interest from Detroit for Phaneuf.

Anyone care to speculate on what kind of return the Leafs might expect to get if that deal comes to fruition tomorrow?

Holzer's out with a concussion. I never thought the Leafs would get anything for him anyway, but now we'll never know for sure.

At this point I'm really skeptical we see any trades of any significance at all tomorrow.

That's what my gut is telling me as well, but none of us expected Clarkson to be moved so who knows.

I think they're playing up the Leafs possibilities some for ratings. Having said that:

Fringe guys like Jokinen, Booth or Holzer (if tradeable with his concussion) aren't going to return much if they do move. But that might happen.

I can see Lupul move if they eat some of his salary. And why not eat some of his salary? ... because they're not going to be seriously contending before his deal runs out. It's almost pointless to keep him for the balance of his deal. Roll the roster!

I can't see Phaneuf or Kessel likely to move - too much money and term at this time of year with a cap crunch coming with the fall of the CDN dollar. And they're overpaid (certainly Phaneuf)

I can see Bernier maybe moved because they're rebuilding - might get something there. I can see Polak moved for similar reasons and because he's a dman - teams always looking for D.

I can see Gardiner or Bozak moved to change chemistry/direction - if they get something half decent back. Gardiner isn't likely to go to go to a playoff team.

So there's a bunch that could happen in what looks like a very active, over paying trade market.

As nearly anyone on this roster could go, I expect they'll get something more than a fringe player done in this climate. They're in rebuild mode so they'll probably take best offers for some of these guys.

I don't think moving Bernier makes a lot of sense unless the return is really good. I see Bernier a lot like Braden Holtby. Came up was really good for a while, slipped back last year, and then bounced back. I expect the same from Bernier as long as the Leafs can be somewhat respectable defensively as a team next year.

I think you're really underestimating how much teams value depth down the middle going into the playoffs. The return for him isn't going to be significant or anything, but, I think the only way he's not moved is if the Leafs manage to move Bozak instead - and, even then, there's a good chance Jokinen goes, too.

I wasn't even speaking specifically about the Leafs. It seems like just about anyone of any significance who was rumoured to be dealt tomorrow has already been dealt.

I hope you're right, but I'd expect the "return" to be something along the lines of the amorphous "future considerations" (return dependent upon performance) or a 7th round pick. I'd rather see Bozak go if there is a good deal to be made. Both would be nice.

I'm confident there will be enough teams kicking the tires on him that the return won't be "future considerations" or a conditional 7th rounder than doesn't materialize. I wouldn't expect more than a 5th or 6th rounder, but, those are still valuable to a team in the Leafs' position.

Even if teams looking for depth down the middle qualify that as "literally anyone who can play centre", there are still better options than Jokinen.
