Devin Setoguchi reportedly close to signing with Leafs

Sure, why not? The roster is basically just a petri dish full of nonsense at this point.

Leafs are awfully close to the contract limit (49, I believe, depending on who gets sent to junior), so I question how true this is. I imagine it's more likely he's getting a training camp invite, or possibly even an AHL contract.

Friendly amendment: a "festering" petri dish.

Could be an intriguing guy to have around, if it's so.

Yeah a camp invite makes a lot more sense. The Leafs already have 13 forwards who played regular minutes in the NHL last season + Frattin, Bailey, and Hyman.

I mean if they are offering him a PTO, sure, I guess.  I mean the Leafs already have a glut of forwards and while Setogucci seems to have been dealing with substance abuse, he also has a reputation of being a bit of a lazy player.  Is that really something we need to be bringing into the organization?

Given he fell flat on his face in Calgary last year, I'd say he'd have to go through a productive year with the Marlies before he'd be considered for an NHL contract.

I'd have to think it's for an AHL contract at this point...and really, given his numbers over the past few years, there isn't a ton of upside there anyways.

Here's the news report from CTV Calgary (starts at 38:28): http://calgary.ctvnews.ca/video?binId=1.1201958

He says that he signed the paperwork yesterday. He doesn't plainly say what the contract is for but the graphic they used said it's a tryout.

Even with the AHL, I'm just looking at the roster and the prospects we have and just don't see where he fits in the organization.  I get the NHL roster having all these 1-year players this year to give guys like Nylander a year in the minors at center.  What I don't really get is what we do with guys like Frattin who arguably show they are too good for the AHL but really haven't been able to establish in the NHL.  He's borderline for an NHL roster spot at this point.

There are some players who can still be called prospects, even if a long shot, who might have to play in the ECHL because of depth.  I just don't see where he fits.

It's just a tryout, right? I don't want us to keep him, but if his work with us in camp gives him another shot at an NHL career, then all the power to him. If he can't keep up at camp, then he'll have some hard decisions to make.

Reminds me of Cheechoo... can't do it without Thorton.

I don't really see much upside to this. I don't think he could be flipped for anything and don't see him being a part of the future and I don't see him as a veteran leader. I'll take a pass.

Agreed. Pass. Nothing to see here. Please move along...

Setoguchi signed to a Professional Tryout contract yesterday. The world shrugged.

Meh.

I don't even know what they do with the guy if he actually impresses...the Marlies are already pretty much full.

I guess the point is he'll likely work very hard in camp and help create the whole "competition for every job" vibe they're looking for. He certainly can't hurt.
