I mentioned it a few day ago but no Leaf ever had the "rock star" status Dougie did... I really miss the electricity this town had when he was here.

I liked Dougie but was more of a Wendel guy myself. It was nice to see Dougie remember Burnsy in his speech.. Those were some great times in leafland

Gilmour was the reason why I became a leaf fan. I've tried to get a new favourite player, but it doesn't work. No one comes close to Gilmour.

Not yet, no. I agree with you. I really loved Sittler before Gilmour (they're still 1 and 2 my favourite Leafs) but I haven't been able to pick an ongoing favourite since Dougie. Absolutely HATED him as a Blue and a Flame because he always managed to kill the Leafs when he played against them, but the very day Fletcher stole him from Doug Risebrough in Calgary, I went out and bought a Gilmour Leaf jersey. Which is the only one  I still wear regularly.

I remember the day that he got traded to Jersey, I was so ticked off. And I was extremly happy when he came back to the leafs, only to get my dream ruined right away ::) for a while I tried to convince myself that Kyle McLaren was my new favourite but that never worked :) And I want to have a favourite player on the leafs, but no one really fits the bill. I like Phaneuf but he's not stabile enough, and Kessel is too much of a diva for me at times. I want another Gilmour on our team >:(

I like Gilmour, but "rock star" is not what I would call him.  For one thing, rock stars are selfish batard?s, and he was not.

And rock stars don't do commericials where they dress in cow tights.

You know what I mean... No player ever got mobbed like he did. It's funny how he could only get in the arena disguised as - Doug Gilmour. He'd wear his own jersey and shades and a cap.  8)

I acknowledge and agree.  Coming disguised as yourself is a stroke of true genius.

Kessel a 'diva'?

I can't think of a player who tries harder to stay away from the spotlight and mind his own business...what makes you feel he's a diva?

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread...glad to see Dougie get in. He deserves it. And kudos to him for mentioning Burns. :)

I don't think that he as all-round as I'd like. I don't see him as much in the defensive work as I would like to.

I saw Dougie play last night at Hockey Night in Barrie.  He was maybe the slowest guy on the ice, and Alan Thicke was playing.

Does anyone know if Dougie has had any health issues?  He would sort of skate to the blue-line, and just sit there watching, hoping something would happen.

I know guys slow down as they age, but I swear Mike Gartner could out-skate half the guys in the NHL today.  Corson looked good for a guy who was sharing the ice with his teenager.  Tucker was good.  Gilmour was slow and looked out of shape.

I haven't heard of any health issues, and a quick Google search didn't turn up anything.  I hope there is nothing serious going on, and merely old age, and having a desk job.

Uhhhh,  probably the reason he retired in the first place, his knees.

Ten years after he retired? I guess that's all it is.  If that's the case, I feel for the guy.  Ten years of pain would be hard to live with.

Whenever I see Gilmour on TV he looks completely bagged.  Probably working waaaay too hard, trying to balance the GM gig, family and all the other demands.  It wouldn't help his conditioning, that's for sure.

He's still the king though.  Nobody got us closer to to that cup than he.

There is no debate.  He is the king.

He was the biggest draw for me in a game that included current NHLers Steve Downie, Matt belesky and Corey Perry, as well as Leaf alumni Gilmour, Mike Gartner, Shayne Corson, Darcy Tucker and others, as well as Ron McLean, Don Cherry, Kurt Browning, Alan Thicke.  It was important for me to give her the chance to see one of the all time great Leafs.  I almost felt that I needed to apologize to her.
