Erik Karlsson traded to Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh got the better player and did it by unloading a 1st, 2nd and a lot over overpaid players.  Given their closing compete window this seems like a really good deal for them

I agree. The context is Crosby and Malkin are getting old. Give them one more shot.  If Karlsson is vastly over, paid in three years, it will just help them tank better. Naturally they will get the next generational talent at that point.

Good move for Pittsburgh.  With long-term job security and stability, Dubas has enough runway here that he can try and maximize the last good years (if they haven't already passed) of the Crosby/Malkin/Letang era, while setting the wheels in motion for an eventual rebuild.

At first I didn't love this trade for Pittsburgh considering the lack of retention on Karlsson, but San Jose taking on over $12mil in cap space between 3 overpaid players and only getting a 1st round draft pick in return feels really, really weak on their part.

Subtracting Granlund and Petry on its own is a win. Getting a year or two of Karlsson on top of it while getting a bit younger in the aggregate is nice.

Article says San Jose is retaining $1.5M

Yeah, that's my bad, meant more significant retention. I think a lot of people expected San Jose to retain at minimum 30% to get Karlsson more in the $8mil AAV ball park. At that price I think San Jose might have been able to get a more valuable return. At $10mil they did basically gave him away. So there's pros and cons to that for both teams involved.

I def thought Pitt would have to give up more to get Karlsson but that contract is such an albatross. Big swing but really don't like the deal after this year.

I?m not sure anyone really walks away from this deal as a winner.

I still think it's a win for Pittsburgh.  They weren't adding a player of Karlsson's talent via free agency in the next year or two and with Buffalo, Detroit and Ottawa getting older/better they are in the tier of teams fighting to make the playoffs.  Getting into the playoffs and giving Crosby another chance to win games is all they are looking for now and they did it by offloading overpaid depth

Probably the best they could do to become a better team, but it's hard to envision the aging curve not hitting even Crosby in  a couple years.

Sort of seems like the Dubas specialty move at this point. Makes some sense in the short term, probably not great in the long term.

Montreal does.

Do they? They moved one year of Hoffman for two years of a rapidly declining Petry. The rest of the pieces they were involved with are pretty marginal/meaningless, and if they can move Petry, they?ll have to retain salary, which means dead cap space for two seasons. That?s not a win.

Pittsburgh comes out the best, but it?s hard to say it?s a win. They get a $10m per year wildcard. Was last season a resurgence or just a year where everything went right? They?re definitely banking on the former, but if it?s the latter, it?s not going to make them better. Even if it?s the former, Crosby and Malkin are starting to push 40. How much do they have left in the tank? The supporting cast in Pittsburgh isn?t enough to make up any real drop off there.

Crosby turned 36 today.

Yes. I?d considering that the beginning of pushing 40 for a professional athlete.
