Game Notes

PHI
?Rob Zepp (5-2-0, 2.80 GAA, .893 Sv%) will start for the Flyers
?Steve Mason was just taken off the IR after missing the past 2 weeks with a knee injury, he's not fully healthy but he's expected to back-up Zepp because Flyers
?Kimmo Timonen, whose career seemed over because of blood clots in his right leg, is nearing a return to the line-up. He won't play against the Leafs though

TOR
?Bernier likely starts for the Leafs
?Phaneuf is expected to return to the line-up after missing 12 games
?Zach Sill will skate with the Leafs in the morning, but I'm guessing that he gets into the line-up
?Hoping it's Panik who gets to play in Winnik's spot on the Kadri line, he looked really good last time injuries put him in a top-6 role

Injuries

?Ray Emery - Lower Body - Injured Reserve
?Kimmo Timonen - Leg - Day to day

I'm sure part of the reason for trading away Franson, Winnik and Santorelli before the deadline was to throw down an anchor right away and stop any momentum this sqaud may be able to find after securing a few points in the last few games.

But, looking at this roster, I still see a team capable of putting up some 'W's down the stretch. Not many, mind you. Just enough to undue all the fine work tank nation has done the past few months.

Hopefully a few more key players get moved by Monday so the tank can 'officially' begin, and we can all ride out the season with the hope of getting a real good player at the draft this year, and start what should have been done  the day Burke signed on as the GM....a full and proper rebuild.

I'm with you CTB, I like Panik and would like to see what he does with more ice time.  And he's only 24.  I hate to say it, but I hope the Leafs slow down and allow Carolina to pass them.  With Ottawa winning tonight, the teams above the Leafs are starting to pull ahead, but the teams below are stagnating.  And that 5th pick is 1 (or 2) slots too high for me.

The secret to success will be for Komarov and Sill to annoy the Flyers and make them draw penalties so that we can get Clarkson out there on the power-play.

It'll be interesting to see how the defence is utilized tonight. Phaneuf is still on the left-side, which means Rielly and Gardiner are pushed down the line-up. They really should have moved Phaneuf back to the right side and kept both of those guys in the top-4. Will Phaneuf-Holzer get big minutes against the Giroux line, and other top lines in the future? Because if so then Horachek really is embracing the tank.

Sill on the Komarov line isn't good, look at the Flyers Pk%

The Leafs might win this one that way... hopefully they won't

I'm sure I'll get flak for saying this, but man, I really didn't notice Phaneuf was gone and is it bad to say I really don't care to see him back?

I hope his return doesn't stunt the progress Rielly and Gardiner were making in his absence.

I think his shot was missed a bit on the powerplay, or even just the threat of his shot. But for the most part the Gardiner-Franson pairing filled in nicely for him. I haven't really watched the games much since the Franson trade so I can't comment on how they've looked then.

Phaneuf is a good defenseman, and none of the guys are ready to step in 23-28 minutes a game on a consistent basis.

I'm of the opinion that the Leafs are going to need a steady presence back there through a rebuild, so I'm not convinced that moving Phaneuf is a priority.

Jokinen has actually looked tradeable...I mean, like 5th rounder kind of tradeable, but still.

I know Winnipeg just acquired Tlusty, but I wonder if they would be interested in getting him back to center their 3rd line.  With Perreault out for the year (likely) they have Jim Slater (11 points over the last 3 years) and a 21 year old Adam Lowry (16 points in 60 games) as their 3rd/4th line centers.

I think Polak or even Robidas could serve that role.

Yeah, gotta believe that if they can get a good return for Phaneuf, he goes. Other than the PP, I haven't noticed whole lot of difference with him out of the lineup. I don't think he's worth the cost of that contract and don't think he's captain material.

Who would you slap a 'C' on with this current roster?

No one, really - and that's a big part of the problem. With this group, I'd just go with 3 alternates.

The C is a largely ceremonial thing, really. He's the guy who takes ceremonial face-offs and talks to refs in game. With the way the Leafs are going, you give it to Robidas or whatever other veteran is left after the purge and go from  there. Or go with 3 As. Either way, it's really not a big deal.
