Georges Laraque: The NHL has a problem with performance-enhancing drugs

Former NHL tough guy makes unprovable allegation toward former NHL players, and *just so happens* to have a book coming out?

No way! What a coincidence!

I always find it just a little suspicious when the allegations come out AFTER the player has retired and has a book coming out.  I wouldn't be shocked if it isn't true that a bunch of guys are using steroids/HGH/other stimulants but at the same time I think its a little funny that Laraque probably had a career because of them and waits until he no longer benefits to call out the establishment.

Canseco's allegations were met with type of sentiment.

Here is how how to figure out whether guys are taking steroids:  Find out whether there exist effective drugs that won't be caught by the NHL screening techniques. If there are, you can be sure guys are taking them.  The incentives are too high -- on the order of millions of dollars.  Given the fact that guys in other sports regularly evade testing it is likely possible to do so in the NHL.  We don't here much about testin in the NHL so that probably means the methods aren't all that stringent.

I'm not surprised to read of Laraque's statement towards drug usage (performance-enhancing drugs), considering what we've already learned of several enforcers who passed away this year.

This is something that has plagued sports the world over, and it was bound to be exposed, at least in part, by someone from the league at some point.

Laraque is also getting plenty of flak for calling Wayne Gretzky...

... "The worst coach I've ever played for."

I figure a publisher won?t bother with a book like this unless it has some controversy for the book tour. Free marketing from the media.
It seems more common place these days with semi-famous people writing books.
They need dirt, its just cheap.

I view Laraque as a pretty stand up guy. I'd be surprised if some players aren't juicing under the radar.

I think we've seen / heard allegations / proof about athletes in all sports juicing so I don't see why the NHL would be any different but I also think the MLB was in a league of its own in terms of players using performing enhancing drugs.

Calling Gretz out like that = classless.

Right.  here's the crux of the matter summarized at the end of the article:

Laraque is wrong about Pang using Twitter to defend his guy, because the dude asking for an on-the-downlow conversation to settle beefs probably shouldn't have, you know, called out Wayne Gretzky by name in a book.
