Game Notes

CAR
?Scott Darling (8-9-6, 2.64 GAA, .903 Sv%) will likely start for the Hurricanes
?Carolina is the top ranked possession team in the league, with a CF% of 54.24%
?The Canes sit 4 points behind the Islanders for the final wild card spot in the East, but Carolina also has a game in hand
?Teuvo Teravainen is showing how streaky forwards can be this season: Teuvo scored 19 points in 14 games between Oct. 26-Nov. 22, since then he has just 3 points in his past 11 games

TOR
?Andersen (17-10-1, 2.67 GAA, .922 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
?The Leafs will be celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the league's first official game played: a match between the hometown Montreal Wanderers and the Toronto Hockey Club on December 19th, 1917
?An injury to Zaitsev will mean Connor Carrick finally draws back into the line-up. He was re-united with Gardiner at practice. The two were a regular pairing last season and put up a 54.3% CF and 62.1% GF in almost 700 minutes together
?Matthews missed practice on Monday, suggesting that he won't play. Babcock had Nylander back in the middle at practice
?Yes, the game-time is at 2pm. No, I don't really know why.
Injuries

?Lee Stempniak - Upper Body - Injured Reserve
Code:

?Nathan Horton - Back - Out indefinitely
?Joffrey Lupul - Actually Injured - Out indefinitely
?Nikita Soshnikov - "Groin" - "Injured" Reserve
?Nikita Zaitsev - Lower Body - Injured Reserve
?Auston Matthews - Hand/Concussion/Back - Day to day

Apparently, it's the time the first NHL game started. So, like, homage or something.

A lot of people seem to have assumed this but the first game had an advertised start time of 8:15pm.

Just passing on what I heard reported on the radio this morning.

Yeah, like I said it does seem to be the a pretty widespread belief (I'm pretty sure I even heard Mirtle say it) but it's still wrong: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/mystery-nhl-first-game-montreal-1.4049433

Anyway, I think the idea was to mimic the school-day games that the Marlies and other AHL teams do from time-to-time and have a game where a lot of children would be able to attend. Some of the promotional stuff about the game talks about how they want to celebrate the next generation of fans and even asks people to bring kids along with them. I have doubts that'll work in this market though. It would have been cool if they were able to secure a boatload of tickets for kids from certain schools or something like that to make sure they had the type of attendance they wanted.

Yeah, that makes sense. I'm sure they offered schools in the downtown core some sort of promotional package (assuming you're correct with their intention).

This discussion of the start time will likely be far more interesting than the game itself.

A weekday afternoon match-up against our heated rivals the Carolina Hurricanes led by star forwards Teuvo Teravainen and Sebastian Aho doesn't get your gears going??

If the game is celebrating Toronto vs Montreal....shouldn?t it have been a game against Montreal if they are playing at 2pm?

I just don't know how feasible that it is considering the vast majority of tickets are already sold through STHs. It feels to me like the team is just hoping that those season ticket holders bring their kid with them to the game instead of a friend or something. I doubt that happens though. Which is too bad, because a school-day atmosphere like the Marlies get at the ACC would have been incredible.

That's a fair point. I wonder if they considered/offered a buy-back incentive for today's game for that reason? Unlikely, but, who knows? Maybe they just held most of the non-STH tickets for schools? Sure, that would put the overwhelming majority of the kids up in the noosebleeds, but, it's still something.
