Jim Ralph out as Leafs colour commentator

1- got the word that my job as leaf colour guy is over. 16 yr run 1,196 consecutive games ends. Thankful for the run. Thanks to Beyak

Awful news. He was well liked by almost everyone. The heyday of Leafs commentating was Joe Bowen and Harry Neale along with Dennis Beyak and Jim Ralph. Wish it was still like that.

Rogers/Bell probably want one of their own guys doing the colour commentary. Gord Stellick did colour for the Leafs in the early 90's and said in a radio interview a few months ago his "dream job" would be doing colour again.

Bill Watters did colour in the 80's and I hear he's available ;)

Not entirely sure how I feel about it.  I always found the radio broadcasts to be better than the television broadcasts for the Leafs.  The past two years I'm not sure that I feel the same way about it (regional broadcasts, obviously not when Glen Healy is holding his "why wasn't I made the GM" grump-fests).

Can I assume he was a radio guy?

Yes.

I never realized radio is in colour.

Not your best work, Shrimp.

I feel shame. :(

But seriously, though, I didn't realize a radio guy would be considered a colour commentator.  I guess I figured the "colour" part of it was about the visual component of colour TV, and I thought it applied to TV commentators.  Never really thought about it, though.  Does it simply mean they "colour" in the mental visual image for radio listeners?

A colour commentator pretty much just talks when the play-by-play guy isn't describing the action on the ice. He's the one who adds all the analysis and brings up all the statistics.

Welcome to Corporate Maple Leafs.

This is crap. I really liked Ralph and think this is more due to his
relaxed, casual presentation. Kind of like "I don't give a ^&^ about
bowing to Corp Butt kissing. Didn't fit the mold of their talking heads.

Every time I'd listen to the radio all I could think was that I wish Ralph was the colour guy for broadcast games instead of Greg Millen.

Ralph was a revelation especially now more than ever. So this was a Leiweke move?

Probably a Rogers/Bell move. They want their own media-type in there who'll be grateful for the job and bow down to whatever they say.

yep. What I loved about him is that he wasn't afraid to say what we were all thinking some times. Criticizing officials when obvious penalties weren't called, calling a bad play a bad play rather than sugar coating it like some guys do etc. And I loved all his self deprecating humour (to listen to him, you'd think he was the worst goalie ever, when we all know that was Raycroft :) )

bingo!

16 years and they just take away his job. I know this happens all the time but it's just downright heartless. Jim Ralph was one of the good ones. Yet they STILL have Millen around. I know he's TV, but still.

Corporate Maple Leafs indeed. Makes me sick. Bleh.  :P
