North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has died at the age of 69, state-run television has announced.

Mr Kim, who has led the communist nation since the death of his father in 1994, died on a train while visiting an area outside the capital, the announcement said.

He suffered a stroke in 2008 and was absent from public view for months.

His designated successor is believed to be his third son, Kim Jong-un, who is thought to be in his late 20s.

The BBC's Lucy Williamson in Seoul says Mr Kim's death will cause huge shock waves across North Korea.

I was reading through the Toronto Star comments and some posters actually wrote that The Star was crossing the line by saying that it's narrow minded to say good riddance to him and say that the mourners didn't understand how horrible he was to the people of his own country. I can't believe how insane that line of thinking is and how shocked I was to read that anyone would post something like that.

I don't think anyone would say that people shouldn't have been happy with the death of a certain German dictator.

I wonder how this (Jong's death) and his subsequent successor will affect N. Korea as per it's relation to the rest of the world, etc., in terms of whether Jong's successor (his son, most likely) will be of the same ilk as his father was.

Does Jong's death create a 'dent' in the dictatorial grip of N. Korea?  How will this bode for S. Korea?

The world is keeping a watch on developments in the North.

I'd say it was good for the world, but his sons are equally as crazy.

So, I guess that means no peace treaty with North Korea, just the almost 60 year long ceasefire will/may continue?
