I'm hearing that the Toronto Maple Leafs will announce the hiring of Tim Speltz (@spokanechiefs) this afternoon. #Leafs

Good scoop by @TPS_Guy. Long history between Speltz and Babcock and M.Hunter and Speltz got along well at under 18.

Essentially, the job Tim Speltz has accepted with the Leafs is very similar to the offer Kelly McCrimmon considered a year or so ago.

Tim Speltz is a highly credible and highly respected hockey man. Quality hire by the Maple Leafs.

The Chiefs are holding a press conference today at 5pm EST where it's expected this will be confirmed. Here's a quick bio on Speltz from Hockey Canada's website:

Tim Speltz, 56,has been general manager of the Spokane Chiefs since 1990, winning WHL championships and Memorial Cup titles in 1991 and 2008, and spent two seasons as general manager of the Medicine Hat Tigers from 1988-90. The Medicine Hat, Alta., native was named WHL Executive of the Year in 1995-96 and 1999-2000, and assisted the Program of Excellence management group at the 2014 U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup, helping Canada?s National Men?s Summer Under-18 Team win a gold medal.

Not mentioned in that bio is his connection with Mike Babcock. Speltz hired Babs to coach his Spokane Chiefs from 1994-2000 before entering the NHL.

You know I sort of expected the position to be a little bigger, like director of amateur scouting since nobody technically has that title since Dave Morrison went to the pro side. I know that Hunter basically does that now but he also has other responsibilities. If that's what they were offering Kelly McCrimmon then it's not too surprising he turned them down for a bigger opportunity (like when Vegas came calling).

I get that, but I also see the wisdom in having directors for regions instead of a single director. It coudl lead to better (or, at least, more frequent) communication with the scouts on the ground. Let the AGM oversee the whole scouting division, and have the rest split up into teams, so to speak.

Don Luce.... Wow... I remember what a great PK he was for the Sabres.. He and Craig Ramsay were quite the duo.. Wonder if he saw something in Gauthier...

don't know much about Speltz myself but trust the brass

Man, I've been waiting for years now to see Dave Morrisson relieved of his role.

I'd like to see the Penny disappear again. He's been awful since he was with the Canucks.

And you can scratch Vesey probably Thursday or Friday.....

More on this...

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/not-one-to-dwell-on-accomplishments-leafs-coach-babcock-constantly-thinking-ahead-367571681.html

It was 1993 when a then-30-year-old Babcock first interviewed for the Spokane Chiefs head coaching job. Tim Speltz, who is still the Chiefs' general manager today, knew he saw something in Babcock, recently fired by the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Even he couldn't predict the success that would soon come Babcock's way.

He met Babcock for an interview at a Calgary hotel and was immediately impressed. He recalled a confident, intelligent, "take-charge guy", a strong thinker who not only answered Speltz's questions, but asked some of his own.
"He was exactly what we were looking for," Speltz said.

When the head coaching job in Spokane didn't materialize, Babcock ended up behind the bench of the University of Lethbridge and guided the Pronghorns to their first and only CIS University Cup. He eventually took over in Spokane the following year.

After nearly three decades, how?s it feel starting a new job?

Tim Speltz: It?s going to be different in a lot of ways. It?s interesting. Lou Lamoriello, when he presented the job opportunity to me, said, ?you?re not looking for a change, you don?t think you need a change, but believe me because I?ve been through it ? you?ll be better with a change. It will be challenging, and it will be very invigorating and rewarding.? So far it has been exciting. I?m definitely looking forward to it. I can honestly say that I wasn?t thinking a month ago that I was going to be doing anything but [be the Chiefs? GM]. I was 100% satisfied, but when the opportunity was presented to me, it was exciting. Probably just as exciting was the support and enthusiasm from my family and also the Chiefs organization led by Bobby Brett. That was special, and it made it a lot easier for me to feel that this was the right thing to do.

I know that you?ve had chances and turned them down to do other things. Why this chance? Why now? Why did you say yes this time?

Speltz: Honestly, and I?m not trying to downplay anything, but let?s clarify the other chances. The other chances were to throw your hat in the ring to be a candidate. Rightly or wrongly, I honestly believed that the job I had was a very, very special job. It was a job that I revered very highly and respected very much. I really felt that I didn?t want to look for another job and I wasn?t interested in being another candidate. Maybe that was my insecurity. I didn?t need Bobby Brett thinking I was looking or to let the organization down that way. I just looked at it, I didn?t think anything was right, and I was never looking for a job. Maybe the best opportunity I would?ve had was in 2008 after we won the Memorial Cup. I had a team contact me about an opportunity and I said, ?yes, I would be interested in being a candidate, but I want you to know that, if I do get offered the job, I still might not take it. I?m very satisfied with what I?m doing and where I?m at.? I wanted to be honest. NHL teams aren?t interested in you saying no to their jobs. I was no longer a candidate, which I understood totally. It would be no different if I was trying to hire someone here and they said, ?yeah, I?d interview, but if I got the job I still might say no.? I probably wouldn?t have any interest. But that?s how much respect and how much regard I had for this opportunity.

This one, they came and offered me the job. It was the Toronto Maple Leafs, it was Mark Hunter, it was Lou Lamoriello, with the support and endorsement from Mike Babcock. I think the interesting thing is Mark came first and then he went to Mike. I got a strong endorsement there. This just seemed different, this just seemed special; once in the lifetime. As Bobby so eloquently put it, ?if you don?t take this, you?re an idiot. What job are you waiting for?? That put it into perspective a little bit as well.

I had a hard time cropping this one to just the good stuff because then I would've just copied all of it here, which is not optimal. Great interview; refreshingly verbose and open, relative to what we've had here the past year.

Per the heads up on /r/leafs, the Scouting department has made some changes that were fairly obviously forthcoming: regional directors.

Sounds odd until you look him up on Wikipedia. I had nearly forgotten myself...
In August 2013, Bodie married Francesca Leiweke, the daughter of Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment president, Tim Leiweke.

Is Tim still around? Can we stop accommodating Troy yet?

Not knowing any actual details about Troy's work in scouting, his profile indicates he would still have value as a pro scout.

He is of a similar age to most of the veterans still in the league, so he'll have decent awareness and networking ties to his cohort and the one or two cohorts older and younger. He's been through the system and knows what it took to get to the NHL level and also what he didn't have to make it further. I've found it is easier to recognize in people what you never had (or had to work harder for).

The West Coast is his backyard, so we have an embedded resource with first-person ties to the community, to many players in the area, and probably to player-adjacent people as well. He's also a walking advertisement that if you do right by the MLSE, they can do right by you after your career (see also: Robidas).
