Hard to believe Leo on the first line.  Would have preferred instead:

Hyman - Matthews - Nylander/Marner
Johnsson - Marleau- Marner/Kapanen
JVR - Bozak - Kapanen/Brown
Komarov - Moore - Brown

Then again, perhaps Komarov has a few tricks up his sleeve facing Marchand & co.  If he can provide a 'distraction-' to free up Matthews & Nylander...on the other hand, still don't like it.

This is the game for Marleau and Plekanec.

Plekanec I never really expected much but I am still dissapointed.

Marleau plays with very little jam and I get why the Sharks weren't successful with him in the playoffs.

Marner and Nylander showed way more than him in Game 1. They were willing to go to the dirty areas at least. Marleau is the definition of floater.

Hope he has a great game tonight but I don't think he has it in him.

I think tonight will be a closer game, but I'm still not confident in a win. I'm clinging to the old theory that you're not in trouble until you lose a playoff game at home though.

So Babcock dismantles the one line that scored a goal in game 1 and then he leaves the JVR/Bozak/Brown line intact when they achieved absolutely nothing.  Interesting.  The JVR line was completely invisible in game 1.  We'll see what happens.  But I am not going into this game with high expectations.

As Mirtle pointed out, Babs say "warm-ups" here, which makes you wonder if there's a bit of gamesmanship going on here. Either way, Babs needs to earn his salary here and out-coach Cassidy. For all of Carlyle's warts, I remember he did everything he could to try to get Kessel away from the Bergeron/Chara match-up so he could have some more open ice to play with. Babcock has to try to do the same.

Matthews played 15 minutes in game 1. I know that was largely because of penalties but he still would have been fresh all game. Double shift him with Johnsson and Kapanen on the 4th line. Sneak him out as a winger with Marleau and Marner on the 2nd line.

Donato's a better player than Wingels, so if Boston upgrades their line-up because of the Kadri hit that'll be an even bigger punch to the gut.

I liked the idea Mirtle & Jonas were kicking around in their podcast: put Marner and Nylander together, promote one of Kapanen or Johnsson to the top line (leaving the other on the 4th -- or promoted to the third). It'd be easier to find open ice for the team's talent if there were two scoring threats at even strength. Don't see it in those warm-up lines.

You're seriously pinning the Sharks no Stanley Cups on Marleau? Does the rest of the team count?

It's funny, that line, more or less, has been intact for two straight seasons and it is easily the weakest part of the team. They can't get out of their zone and they can't get any extended pressure. After the faceoff, Bozak is probably the easiest player in the NHL to compete against. I'd be curious to see how JVR looked flanking any other centre.

Komarov stays on the first line for maybe one shift. This is just Babcock playing games.

So true particularly in today's hockey style:  Making a case in point for the Leafs:

The teams that have won recently have won by excelling more at scoring goals than stopping goals. Check it out below, those are the last four Cup champs playoff ranking in goals for and against.

...Boston Bruins beating the Leafs is by the Leafs beating themselves. Their biggest weapon is their offence, their kids, their creativity. They can score in bushels when they're humming. If Mike Babcock puts them in offensive shackles, what?s left to beat Boston with? Are they going to out-defend one of the league?s stingiest teams despite themselves being downright middling defensively?
