Leafs Sign Byron Froese

Good for him. The Leafs already had him signed to an AHL-contract for the upcoming season, I wonder if another team came sniffing around.

He's not really a prospect at this point though, right? Maybe an emergency call-up guy?

I can't imagine that he is.  He had by far his best professional hockey season last year with the Marlies but I would imagine he's the new "veteran" guy in the lockerroom along with TJ Brennan at this point.  Although who knows, maybe something clicked with him when he got sent down to the ECHL last year.

He put up 6G 13A in 97 games before coming to the Marlies where he goes and puts up 42 points in 46 games.  He was a 4th round draft pick by the Blackhawks so maybe he gets called up one day and just doesn't get sent down?

I wouldn't be opposed to it if Froese is the guy who gets called up when we trade off the pending UFAs assuming he has a similar year.  It does put the Leafs at 49 signed contracts (once they sign Marincin, Kadri and Bernier).

This was a pretty good article on Froese from March for anybody who is unfamiliar with him: http://theleafsnation.com/2015/3/10/byron-froese-making-a-case-for-an-nhl-contract

Is he a legitimate prospect? Likely not, but he's only a little older than guys like Bailey and Hyman (and Bozak when he debuted).

His Hockey Reference page is no help. Is it Fro-eeze-y? Froze?

Marlies pxp guy pronounces it Frase/phrase: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y17VP5-9v-I

Googled and found an NHL pronunciation guide with his name in it and says it's pronounced FRAYZ

I wonder if he'll end up being a Trevor Smith type for the Leafs next year, assuming he can keep up his level of play from the Marlies.
