Leafs trade McKegg to Florida for Zach Hyman

Hyman, 23, was a Hobey Baker finalist this year and a pending UFA. It was expected that Florida wouldn't be signing him, the Leafs must feel like they have a good shot.

Elliotte Friedman reported that the Leafs were interested in him last month in a 30 Thoughts column:

30. Finally, circled back around Zach Hyman, the Michigan forward who informed Florida he will become an unrestricted free agent in August. Normally, teams don?t try to trade for this kind of player, knowing they can get him for free in a little more than two months. But there does appear to be some interest (maybe to wine-and-dine him in advance, who knows?) from the likes of Detroit, San Jose and Toronto, among others. No doubt the Panthers would love to get a pick out of it, if possible.

Another note: Hyman is from Toronto and Kyle Dubas was his former advisor. So it seems pretty likely that they'll be able to get a contract done.

Yeah really low risk move, I like it. I'd be very surprised if they can't get him signed for all the reasons above, but even if they can't, McKegg is probably never going to amount to much in the NHL and the 7th is just as likely (unlikely) to pay off.

Is this what Babcock meant by Toronto boys wanting to come home to play?  Are you paying attention Steven Stamkos?

Not a bad trade, the Leafs move a guy who was on the bubble to make the team and add a player with more upside.  And, they get a pick in the process.

Surely the condition on the 7th rounder is if he is signed so it's either McKegg for Hyman or McKegg for a 7th rounder.  I'd be surprised if it's both.

?They?re going to get a kid that bleeds blue and white, and understands the tradition of the Maple Leafs and who has always dreamed of being a Maple Leaf,? said Stuart Hyman. ?He?ll be proud to wear that uniform.

The 7th rounder only comes into play if the Leafs do not sign Hyman. In other words, it won't come into play. They already were granted permission to start speaking to him yesterday and it sounds like he wants to come so.....

Beat me by a minute!!  Another part of his father's quote:

?Mike Babcock is an incredible coach. To play for him would be an honour.?

This is likely his father saying all the right things, but it's interesting he mentions Babcock.  I do wonder how much having him as a coach will affect the Leafs ability to draw free agents.

would be great if he can become a full time leaf contributor in leaf future. would be my 3nd favorite Hyman. Jeffry Hyman will always be #1 (aka Joey Ramone)

Please, please let his nickname be "Buster".

Being that I grew up with a similar last name, I guarantee you that was his nickname growing up.

Your online handle now makes so much sense.

I always thought it was a play on the popular physicist "Science Buster" Heinz Oberhummer.

RANKNAME TEAM CL IND. GAMES  GOALS ASSISTS POINTS AVG.
1 Jack Eichel     Boston U. Fr. 40 26 45 71 1.78
2 Jimmy Vesey Harvard Jr. 37 32 26 58 1.57
3 Evan Rodriguez Boston U. Sr. 41 21 40 61 1.49
4 Zach Hyman Michigan Sr. 37 22 32 54 1.46

Edit:  This might be a pretty big coup for the team...but he is 5 years older than Eichel, Vesey is 22, Rodriguez is 21.

This kind of move is what impresses me with the new management.  McKegg was probably never going to be more than a callup in case of injury.  Sounds like Hyman will have a chance.  By the way isn't Vesey one of our picks as well?
Really nice progressive move.

Jimmy Vesey is an American ice hockey left winger. He was selected by the Nashville Predators in the third round, 66th overall, of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Vesey is currently playing for the Harvard University in the NCAA. Wikipedia
