NHL Awards Night

Want to know who won? Of course not who cares!

Want to see some of the ridiculous breakdowns of the voting? Obviously!

Yup, that's Randy Carlyle there at the bottom. Some professional hockey writer broadcaster thought that he was the 3rd best NHL coach this season.

You may also notice a lack of Joel Quenneville there.

And this was the Norris trophy breakdown:

Doughty came out with the most 1st place votes but still finished 2nd. 20 voters who voted for Karlsson didn't have Doughty in their top-5.

Fans can't vote properly.  Media can't vote properly.  GMs can't vote. I think I should make unilateral award decisions from now on.

Phil Kessel just won the Vezina...why?  Because it makes as much sense as a guy with 3 Stanley Cups not getting a single Top 5 vote for coach of the year.

Cam Talbot with a Vezina vote. Next person to tell me that a GM is smarter than me just because he's a GM gets a punch in the face.

Also Cory Schneider played 69 games and had the 5th best save percentage in the league. Not. A. Single. Vote.

I know that of all the trophies the Masterton is in like a 3-way tie for the least cared about, but Dubnyk "overcame" being a bad goalie for a year. Letang overcame a stroke at the age of 27. Come on people.

Thanks CTB!  You've taken a perfectly terrible event and made it kind of fun.  I can't bring myself to watch it, but have enjoyed refreshing this thread while I work.  :D

I'm just following along on twitter while doing some other things. Couldn't imagine actually watching this whole thing. It's amazing the NHL feels the need to do this when no other league does. And it's always unanimously described as a train wreck. Just take whatever money you would have spent on it and donate it to a charity or something.

I don't know if it's an East coast bias or a bunch of idiots holding it against Doughty that the Kings missed the playoffs but that's insane.

Good to see Ekblad win though. I really do think age should be a factor in Calder voting and what he did on the blue line at his age is pretty singularly impressive.

It's clearly time the NHL changes the way that these are voted (I said 5 years ago). Make it so that there are actually a number of nominees that the people have to vote for, as opposed to these stupid free-for-alls.

A vote for Dustin Byfuglien as the best defenceman in the league is just a complete waste of a vote. So either find out who makes stupid votes like that and get them out of the process or change the process to make votes like that impossible.

Carlyle got a vote for coach of the year.  This is why I don't ever watch the NHL awards.

It's a regular season award though, isn't it? Quenneville coached this Blackhawks team to a #4 seed and 3 points more than the Jets got. Admittedly Kane got hurt but most good teams dealt with injuries at some point

I realize that what makes for a good coach is debatable but to me at the very minimum this award should be in part about trying to distinguish where a team finishes from where its talent would dictate they finish and in that regards it's pretty tough to make the case that Quenneville is a top 5 guy this year. How many points would an average coach get from this roster?
