NHL Waivers Thread

We've had some waivers action around the league the past few days, but today brought maybe the first shocker. Philly placed the David Clarkson of defencemen, Andrew MacDonald, on waivers for the purpose of reassignment.

MacDonald has a cap-hit of $5mil for the next 5 seasons.

Not a huge surprise, because he is terrible - especially at that cap number. This move really just highlights some of the changes in philosophy the Flyers will see under Hextall instead of Holmgren.

I heard Tokarski was waived, if there was room for another goalie I'd seriously consider picking him up.

He's a 26 year old backup who had a good run for a handful of playoff games. He was okay for the Habs last year - roughly average in terms of Sv%. Pretty replaceable. He might get claimed, but that's largely because some teams have some awful backups.

Yeah, I meant if, say, Reimer was gone. Also, there's a touch of nostalgia for me from his run with Norfolk against the Marlies in the Calder a couple years back.

Cleary on waivers, will Babs want him?

The rumour was Babcock didn't want him back in Detroit, but Holland did, and that's part of the reasons he's now coaching the Leafs.

Interesting, although maybe he thinks he's better than a few of the guys he has in Toronto?

I doubt that, as well - largely because he's not anymore. I also don't think management would be particularly interested in losing an equally valuable potential trade piece for someone who would have trade restrictions attached to him thanks to the waiver claim.

Habs have put Alex Semin on waivers.

Quite possibly the most polarizing player in the league when it comes to analytics. Had a 55.5% CF, behind only Gallagher, Pacioretty, and Galchenyuk. Just didn't score enough in his time there (only 15 games). With that said I'm not sure why anybody thought that he and Michel Therrien would be a good match.

Sort of an example of the limitations of CF as an individual metric. From the other side of the coin, Semin was largely invisible in the Habs games I've watched. The advanced numbers show that he wasn't a detriment to the team, but the traditional/eye-level analysis of his game would definitely indicate that he wasn't particularly helpful to the team, either. Probably not a great fit in Montreal, but, combined with his disastrous season last year . . . it's not looking good for him in terms of future prospects. His offensive production has just dried up.

I don't really get what the issue is.  Like...almost every corollary stat for him looks good but the raw totals aren't there.  I don't get what's going on.

Puck Daddy's article brought up the possibility of Anaheim claiming him. Semin had his best years with Boudreau back in the day. Anaheim's last in the league in goals per game, and look particularly weak on the wings aside from Perry.

Well, in this case, I think some of the raw totals fill in the blanks. He's only credited with 18 shots (including all of 1 on the PP, despite getting 2:05 per game) and 11 missed shots in 15 games. Add in a handful of his shots that were likely blocked (I know those number are out there somewhere, but I forget where), and what you find is that he's just not putting the puck on net enough to generate much offence - roughly 2 attempts on net per game. Habs fans have also called him out for being a slow skater (or, potentially, just not trying that hard), so, even though his line had the puck more, he's not doing the kinds of things he needs to do to get into good scoring positions, generate quality scoring opportunities, or create much offence at all. Basically, at the end of the day, he's putting in a bottom 6 type performance for a bottom 6 type paycheque, despite being a really poor fit for a bottom 6 type role.
