Line-up Notes

NAS
?Pekke Rinne will likely start for Nashville

TOR
?Bernier likely starts for Toronto
?Not sure if Randy sticks with the same lines after the Buffalo game. Wouldn't mind seeing Leivo or Panik on that 2nd line instead of Winnik. We all knew that he wouldn't last there all season long, and the offence from him seems to have maybe dried up

I'm looking forward to this game.  I haven't had a chance to see the new Nashville style of play yet.  That and Filip Forsberg...worst trade ever?

Start of a tough stretch for the Leafs.

I'm guessing a good effort from them but they'll lose in similar fashion to the Pittsburgh games. 3-1 Preds.

I watched the Bolts game last night and the Rangers only got 16 shots on net with at least 3 pp's that I remember (one 5 on 3). My gut tells me they're going to kill us on Thurs.

How about:

Komarov - Kadri - Kessel
JVR - Bozak - Panik
Santorelli - Holland - Clarkson
Leivo - Smith - Winnik

Possibly switching Panik/Leivo.  But I'd really like to see that 1st line combo given a chance.

I don't see us going back to the Kessel/Kadri pair unfortunately. I'd try putting Holland on Kadri's wing. He needs a bit more skill on that line and Holland's played really well since moving to the 3rd line.

JVR-Bozak-Kessel
Panik-Kadri-Holland
Komarov-Santorelli-Clarkson
Leivo-Smith-Winnik

I'd swap Clarkson and Winnik, but that probably won't happen either. Then when we're healthy plug Lupul in Panik's spot and Booth in Leivo's.

I'm expecting a much better effort tonight and possibly even a 'W'. Should be a tough game.

Heads will roll if its another pasting.

It is unfortunate.  This season in ~67:00 5on5 Leafs are scoring roughly 1.5 G/20 when Kessel is with Kadri and the team is scoring 55% of the goals when they are together.  With Bozak this season in ~173:00 5on5 the Leafs are scoring 0.92 G/20 and the team is scoring 44% of the goals when they are on the ice together.

Obviously a smaller sample size (anyone but Bozak will be) but still seems to be worth pursuing.  Actually so far this season all the stats (and again sample size issues may come into play) seem to point to Kadri with Kessel and Bozak away from Kessel as actually being better.

Link to Kessel's stats with various teammates and without

Thanks, I was looking for this. Now to learn how to read it.
I think there is a case to be made for Winnik - Kadri - Kessel to be reunited, but not used against the other team's top line. Komarov - Santorelli - Whoever works well as a shutdown line.

JvR - Bozak - Kessel make our defense corps look bad by never providing easy outlets.

The big question is who goes out when Booth and Lupul come back in the next 10 days?

It's not that big of a question. It will be two of Leivo, Panik, or Smith. Leivo's an easy send down because of his waiver status and the fact that he'll be better suited playing bigger minutes in the AHL. The decision between Panik and Smith will come down to whether the team wants to drop Holland or Santorelli down to 4C or keep them both in the top-9.

We're missing Lupul more than we might think, I think.  eep

Possibly but Lupul hasn't shown anything produced much this year so far.

This is closer to the truth. He's played very well when he's been in the lineup. He and his line mates just haven't been able to beat the goalies or the goalposts very often.

9 shots on net in his last game. Sure, it was against Buffalo, but that Lupul-Kadri-Kessel line was poised to look pretty good before he pulled a Lupul.

His SH% was around 4.5% when he got injured (at 5on5).  Last season it was double that.  He was getting something like 10 shots per 60 minutes of ice time.  Not getting the bounces but hardly not showing anything.  There's still value in playing well even if it doesn't end up in points.

Indeed.  Kadri being another example.
