Rating the team, game by game?

Just throwing this out there:  Would there be any collective interest or value in people rating the team's performance after each game?  Sort of like we do with the MOTM, except whoever wants to vote simply rates the team's performance on a scale from 0 to 10, and there can be an averaging of the results to come up with a collective rating for each game.  The reason I think of it is that while we can look at the team's record, and we can look at the team's 10 game chunks thread (both of which have value), neither necessarily reflect the overall team performance game-by-game.  The results could go on a graph or chart if anybody had the time and inclination to represent the data that way.  I guess I feel it would be kind of neat to look back over whatever length of time and get a sense of the perception of how well or poorly the team is playing, and what overall trends there may be, regardless of the W-L results.

I suppose this idea occurred to me as a direct result of Wednesday's game, in which the Leafs were horribly outplayed, and yet won the game anyway.  The score and game result really don't tell the story, but people's ratings of the game would, at least in a small way.  Beyond the Detroit game, in terms of W-L results, the team is virtually on fire since the Nashville game, picking up 15 out of 18 points since then, while outscoring the opposition 37-21.  Yet, despite the results, there are some frequent concerns among many about the overall team performance.  Collective team ratings could give a clearer picture of overall team performance and trends.  If it were to be done, there should be no questioning or criticism of others' ratings, and people should give honest ratings, no -5's or 11's for yucks.

Any yays or nays?

My extension of this cool idea would be to crunch the game stats in useful categories that correlate to long term success (5v5 Corsi/Fenwick [close, behind, with lead], PP+PK%, ice time allocation*, etc.) and rate those things (0-10**), and then average it for an overall score. Then track the trends over blocks of games (series of 7s to loosely simulate how we'd track over a playoff series)

But it's a lot of work, and I'd be okay with a crowdsourced opinion in lieu of that work.

* is there a metric for rating ice time allocation? maybe measuring the spread between the top and bottom minutes per category of skater, ignoring injury losses.
** 5 = league average, then tier the rating accordingly

I like the idea. My suggestion would be to integrate the voting into the MotM thread. I would also elaborate it so the team would be rated in five areas each game, with the game score being the sum of the averages for each of the five areas:

Foreward offensive play
Foreword defense
Defensemen defense
Defensemen offense
Goalie play

I made the necessary addition

I know my vote would factor in extraneous circumstances.  Case in point Leafs were outplayed but won in Detroit Wed night.  If you factor in Detroit being 2nd overall in the NHL, hotter than a branding iron and waiting at home for a Leaf team that played the night before.  Then you also look at the fact we won the night before and had to travel to Detroit for the back to back.  The fact that we won and were outplayed doesnt bother me as much as if you stripped away a few of those factors.  That is the type of game a contender finds the intestinal fortitude to grab a point in, if not two points like we did.  That game would be hard to vote on for me.

Can we agree they deserved this win against Detroit? So many negative tones after the win on Wednesday. I chaulked up their play in that game to them looking tired on the 2nd half of the back to back (and playing a top tier team on a winning streak). That didn't sit well with some posters here. Tonight they looked like the better team, and got the 'W' as well.

Detroit was playing their 2nd game of a back-to-back against one of the hottest teams in the league. What did you expect?

You could have said the same thing on Wednesday but about Toronto.

Or did some one say that?

Yes. It's almost like we can come to different conclusions depending on shifting circumstances and evidence. High five for critical thinking!

But you won't agree that the Leafs possession game on Wednesday had anything to do with the back-to-back games? Or was that Busta?

It's a nice try on your part but the issue on Wednesday was not why they played terribly.

Once again, you've managed to share an opinion, take a jab, and be just vague enough so that it can be interpreted in many ways and argued later, however it fits your mood. Good job.
