:-( RIP Robin Williams

I was just reading about that. I don't know if you're familiar with the WTF podcast but they had an interview with Williams a couple of years back and, if reports are true and that this is a suicide, it shed some light on some possible reasons why. He was a man with a lot of personal demons.

He has carried this with him a long time. He's also had issues with substance abuse. I can't say I'm that shocked in retrospect, but it still hurts. He was an icon for me in my childhood.

There are a lot of stories about some of the personal struggles he battled with.  There are also a lot of stories talking about his excessive energy and being very personable on movie sets.  I didn't always like his movies but he always came across as genuine in his films.  I feel like he was a guy who got unfairly type-cast as a comedic actor because some of his serious roles were pretty good.

I'm deeply saddened by this. It rips my guts out that he was loved by so many but not by the person that mattered the most.

I'll miss him immensely.

Dead Poets Society, Good Will Hunting were two of my favorite movies to watch over and over again.  Huge talent, what a sad day.  Try to celebrate his life and all his accomplishments as opposed to mourning his death as hard as that is.

Indeed, one of the best improve comedians I've ever seen. RIP Robin, you'll always be one of the best!

One of the funniest people I've ever seen.  He had an eccentric style, and I could see why people would not have like his type of schtick, but one thing about him is that he always seemed genuine and everything just came naturally.

I'd have to say in terms of being shocked and "rattled" by a sudden celebrity death, this would rank right after Michael Jackson's death.

It's pretty sad to see so many comedians, people who make others happy, not be happy themselves and battle some pretty severe inner demons.  I recall reading that being a comedian can actually a quite depressing profession (around the time Richard Jeni died).

RIP Robin Williams.

You were truly one of the most funniest people I have ever heard.

His favourite role of mine will always be the Genie in Aladdin.

just shows the power of depression.. I hated hearing it but this stuff goes on daily with folks who are not celebreties and it is equally sad.. There does seem to be a history of depression /addiction with many comedians. It has taken quite a few whether it be suicide or OD.. Just sad all around no matter how you slice it.

Not every comedian has to have depression to be good, but I can definitely see how being funny is a way of dealing with your issues. Unfortunately things can still spiral out of control and when things don't work out and the laughter stops all you have left is yourself and you thoughts, and that can be scary.

Looks like financial problems also plagued him:

...the actor recently confided to a family friend that he had ?serious money troubles,? and was worried about his family?s financial security.

According to a family friend who had spoken to Williams recently, ?All he could talk about were serious money troubles".

There was also frustration that Robin expressed at having to take television and movie roles he didn?t want to take, but had to for the paycheck,? the source said...

In addition, Williams revealed in a Parade Magazine  interview last year, that he took a role on the now-defunct CBS show The Crazy Ones because he needed the paycheck.

?The idea of having a steady job is appealing,? Williams told the magazine. ?There are bills to pay. My life has downsized, in a good way.?

"I'm selling the ranch up in Napa", he said of his $35 million Villa Sorriso. "I just can't afford it anymore."

It is revealed that he wasn't excited about reprising his role for Mrs. Doubtfire 2.

I enjoyed him in Mork & Mindy at the time, and some of his movies such as Jumangi, Mrs. Doubtfire, etc.  A great and gifted 'natural' talent who will no doubt be missed.  Sad and terrible news to read and hear about on someone who made the world laugh except himself.

I think you mean "wasn't excited":
?Doing sequels was never Robin?s thing, and he wasn?t that excited at having to reprise the role of Mrs. Doubtfire, which was scheduled to start filming later this year.?

He wasn't. Correct.  (Typing error on my part, thanks to my Playbook
keyboard!

Fixed.  :)

Addiction and depression plagued him throughout his career...
