Roman Polak to Leafs

Real_ESPNLeBrun: Leafs get Polak from Blues for Gunnarsson and pick 94

Yeah, I'm not sure I like this. The Leafs needed more Gunnarsson, not less.

It'd sure be nice to know what the Shanaplan is...

I do t know much about Polak, but this sounds like a terrible deal.  We traded our our most reliable dman... And gave up a pick...

I just hope this works out better than the last deal the Leafs made with St Louis or the last defenceman the Leafs brought in from St Louis.

Polak had the worst relative CORSI and Fenwick of St. Louis' top 6 defensemen.  His on ice 5-on-5 SV% was 4th, and his PDO was 5th.  This is definitely not a good trade.

Another player brought in for his "intangibles LOL" rather than hockey skill.

I imagine Gunnarsson was wanting 1st pairing money, that and his lack of physicality probably facilitated this, Polak can be a little nasty.

He still has two seasons left on his deal, so I don't think it was about cash.

This must mean Nonis has a deal in place for a UFA - likely Boyle.  Gunner was the only guy on the team capable of playing the #2 slot.

It could also force Carlyle to finally play Gardiner with Phaneuf, but I mean there were easier ways to accomplish that without hurting the rest of our defence.

Ah thanks.

They save about 750k apparently, plus some rumblings about Gunnarsson having a serious hip issue.
