The Evander Kane Saga -> Traded to Buffalo

So the reason Kane was benched the other day was because he violated the Jets' dress code:

Kane?s transgression on Tuesday, as it turns out, was fairly was minor. He broke dress code, arriving at the rink for a midday team meeting in sweats instead of a suit. By gametime, Kane wasn?t a player.

The NHL makes me laugh sometimes.

All he had to say to Maurice was "coach I jogged to the rink today". Done and done.

The plot thickens!

BREAKING: Evander Kane failed to show up for #NHLJets game in Vancouver, @Sportsnet has learned

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/kane-skipped-game-after-incident-with-teammates/

From the article:

Evander Kane failed to show up in time for Winnipeg?s game in Vancouver earlier this week following an incident with Dustin Byfuglien and other teammates, Sportsnet has learned.

It was previously believed the Jets had made Kane a scratch for the game in his hometown. Following the 3-2 overtime loss on Tuesday, Paul Maurice termed it a ?coach?s decision.?

However, multiple sources familiar with the situation have since indicated that Kane was not on the team?s bus to Rogers Arena and then missed a pre-game meeting. Repeated attempts to reach him were unsuccessful until approximately an hour before puck drop, when Kane answered his cellphone and said he wouldn?t be playing against the Canucks that night.

Earlier in the day, the 23-year-old winger is said to have had a run-in with teammates.

Kane wore a track suit when the Jets players gathered that morning ? a violation of team policy. Following a brief workout and stretch, Byfuglien is said to have thrown those clothes into the shower to send a message to his teammate, according to sources.

Those darn guaranteed contracts.

Kid is super talented but has massive on/off ice issues. Right now he is putting the Jets in a vulnerable position because his value is dropping. Truth is, it would be crazy for any team to pick this guy up.

If he is pulling this crap off in Winnipeg, imagine him in a bigger city with more spotlight?

I'd guess there's a whole ton of spotlight in Winnipeg, likely moreso than the majority of the rest of the league and the majority of the biggest cities in the league.  He could disappear in New York, or LA, or even Toronto to some extent.  Can't in Winnipeg.

I'm going to go ahead and say that's it for Kane in Winnipeg. I also assume that there's much more to this story. Either Kane and Byfuglien have had a difficult relationship for awhile now or a lot more happened the other day than Buff putting Kane's clothes in the shower. Or both probably.

Yeah, he's done in Winnipeg.  Either he's traded right away or goes for the season ending surgery and is traded at the draft.

Question is, do the Leafs go after him?

I'm torn as to whether i want him on the Leafs.  Yeah, he'd be great in the top 6 here and he'd score a lot of goals.

But...attitude, character and fit matters.

I mean unless Clarkson is going in the package, I'd be very hesitant to give up significant assets for him.

He's not top 6 on the Jets, why would his 10 goals and 27 points make him top 6 here?

Because he is top 6 on the Jets and those are top 6 numbers?

Gary Lawless a writer for the Winnipeg Free Press had this to say about Mr. Kane:

(Evander Kane) is not a natural goal scorer.

He scored 30, I think it's an anomaly. He can get streaky, but you look at his career, he scores at a .6 per game clip over his career. This year he has 10 goals and 12 assists for 22 points, he's at .59. That's what he is.

He's not a three-quarters of a point guy a game, he's not a point a game guy, he scores at a little bit more than half a point a game. His career is almost 400 games old, he's 23. If we're expecting more to come from Evander Kane, I think our expectations are probably unrealistic...

He's a very good third-line player, he can climb up in the lineup if there's an injury, but I don't think he's a regular top-six guy... I don't see it.

*Lawless is asked about Kane's linemates and usage*

He's played with different people and it never seems to make much of a difference for him... When he scored 30 goals, who did he play with?

Emphasis mine.

So...he's more Nik Kulemin than JVR according to this Lawless fellow?  Ehhh...i don't know about that.

Kane scored at a 50+ point pace for the last 3 years. This season he's at a 49 point pace despite apparently playing injured for most of the season. He leads the Jets forwards in even-strength ice-time and he gets minutes on both the PP and PK units. He is definitely not a 3rd line player.

And Kessel's an amazing 4th liner.

We could maybe find a spot for Crosby on the 2nd line but I'd hate to knock Kadri and/or Holland out of there.

Right? Because when was the last time you heard of a NFL player being talented but not getting along with his teammates. Never, that's when.
