Torts out on Vancouver?

I thought the record was fine considering the talent and the injuries.  However, I can certainly see the logic of some that tried to assault another coach not being a good representative for the company.

Had to figure it was coming after Gillis got the boot. If you're bringing in someone to reboot the franchise you don't want to saddle them with a coach like Tortorella.

Yeah. He's not exactly the right coach for a team in transition.

I'm not convinced he's the right coach for a team of anyone.  I know he has a Cup win with Tampa and everything but I don't really care for guys who wear out their welcome as fast as he does.  It's one thing to be a "tough" coach, but it's another to be downright crazy at times. I mean the guy tried to start a fight with Bob Hartley TWICE this year.  I'm sorry, but if there were 20 players between him and Hartley, the guy would be in jail for assault.  The guy can coach an established roster filled with hard working players.  My question is, should he be coaching at all though.

He got pretty good results in NY too.  But yeah he tried to start fights with members of the media.

Are coaches contracts guaranteed? Will he get paid for the term of his contract?

Yes. In fact, he's technically still an employee of the Vancouver Canucks, he just doesn't have any responsibilities.

And he has 4 years/$8mil left on his contract.

So..the Canucks don't seem to have any issue firing the coach during the NHL playoffs.  What's the Leafs excuse?

Haven't made their decision yet?

Also a little bit of a different situation. Linden is cleaning house for when he hires a new GM this summer. When you bring in a GM from outside the organization, teams tend to like to give them clean slates to work with.

I don't buy that. Let the new GM come in and make that decision if that's the case. Give him the authority to assess the situation and decide who the coach should be.

Torts was fired because Linden is in charge, and he felt like going in a different direction.

Pretty much. And now since the playoffs don't appear to be an obstacle for firing coaches anywhere else in the league, let's get on with the situation in Leafland already!

Could very well be he has his GM candidate ready to go and they've already talked about whether he would want Torts back... easier/better for Linden to do it now than for the new guy to come in and have to rush the move.

Bottom line we are splitting hairs on this. What should have been done is now done.

Sure but my point was there was speculation that the Leafs didn't want to take attention away from the playoffs by firing their coach.  If Vancouver can do it, then surely the Leafs can as well.  Now I'm worried they may keep Carlyle.

Well, Linden also didn't come straight from working in the NHL head offices, but, even he waited until after the 1st round ended and before a game was played in the 2nd round to announce the move.
