Training camp officially opens in just a few days. Players will report for medicals on Thursday and on-ice sessions will begin on Friday. The first weekend of camp takes place in Niagara Falls and a lot of it will be open to the public, if anyone was interested in checking things out: https://www.nhl.com/mapleleafs/info/training-camp

While this isn't a confirmation, it also wouldn't exactly be surprising to see things start out that way. Assuming Gardiner stays with Zaitsev that leaves Dermott's partner and the #7 and potentially #8 spot open. Carrick, Borgman, Rosen, Marincin, Ozhiganov and Holl are all options there.

At forward Babcock announced in July that he expected Marleau to play with Matthews and Nylander (who is of course without a contract ATM) and Hyman to play with Tavares and Marner. With the exception of Kadri at 3C the entire bottom-6 seems up for grabs with Johnsson, Leivo, and Ennis battling for 2 LW spots, Lindholm, Gauthier, and Cracknell (Dubas mentioned him by name last week) battling for 4C spot, and Kapanen and Brown battling for who plays on the 3rd and 4th line.

Between the pipes Freddy obviously comes in as the starter but the back-up position is wide open with McBackup, Sparks, and Pickard all realistic options.

Also, don't forget, John Tavares is a Maple Leaf.

NHL insider Michael Traikos explains to Jeff Blair why William Nylander should make sure he?s at Maple Leafs camp day one, at risk of losing playing time or getting demoted to the 3rd or 4th line.

lmao

While it would probably be a mistake to assume he's got a job sewn up, it strikes me as pretty unlikely that Johnsson wouldn't break camp with a lineup spot.

I think he's a lock to make the line-up and the very heavy favourite to play on the 3rd line, but there's a small enough chance he starts at 4LW.

Ah, well I remember how Kaberle's holdout that one year crushed the team's hopes from the get-go.

A little stressed about Nylander. $6M(ish) is the going rate. Get it done.

Ya I don't get it.  Only thing I can think of is Leafs want a bridge deal, Nylander is looking for more term.

I think that's what the rumor is right now.
Leafs only offering a bridge (why would they want to do that?) and he wants a long term deal.

I hope it gets resolved by tomorrow....  >:(

It seems straightforward to outsiders like us, but without having any information at all about what the two sides are disagreeing on, we can't even begin to guess what the impasse it.  I mean we can guess, but it's pure Dreger-like speculation with no basis in fact.  The comparables and cap increase seem to suggest 6 years, $6.25-6.50 is reasonable, so who knows what's going on.

I wouldn't be that surprised if it was the other way around.

Getting Marincin in the lineup makes a lot of sense to me.  Playing Hainsey for the full pk seems like a poor idea.  We need another penalty killer.  Babcock has said that Marincin might be the team's best penalty killer.

How many skaters can a team dress?  Can one dress 7D and 12F?  Playing 7D with Marincin being the designated PK guy + player when the team is ahead would be interesting.

What are people's predictions for the D?  I have no idea what is going to happen on the right side.

18 skaters only, so if they want to dress 7 defencemen then they need to go down a forward. Which I've suggested in the past but seems unlikely to happen on any kind of consistent basis.

I've said it before but I think the question with Nylander is going to be to what extent he wants to let the Leafs and their decisions about how to use him as is best for the team influence the contract he wants to get. If, for instance, Nylander thinks that he's really better suited to be a C then the comparisons to other wingers will only go so far.

I said before that I feel like Dubas has both contracts on the table, and the Nylander camp doesn't like either.

I think I feel that way because Dubas doesn't seem like a strong-arm kind of GM, and to only have one offer on the table, take it or leave it, doesn't seem like his style...yet.

That contradicts Willy's quotes to the media about wanting to sign long term, but it's a dance, I know.

That said, if it ends up being a bridge, I'm not sure I'd recommend buying a Nylander sweater as a good investment.

Well yeah everybody wants to sign long-term. But if the rate for 6 or so years is firmly established as $6.5mil-ish then maybe he thinks he's better off taking a shorter deal now and cashing in later.
