Types of Gas

I was getting gas tonight, and I was looking at the three different types that you can purchase, unleaded, mid level, and premium.  Is the premium gas not supposed to be better for the environment than unleaded?

And if it actually is better for the environment, does anybody else find it weird that in a society where the environment is a hot button topic that you can still buy the other two levels that are not as good for the environment?  I realize the cost is more, but is there some law or something that says they have to give more than one choice?

Premium gas helps with higher compression motors deal with knocking.  Use what is recommended in owner's manual.

I drive 15 hours a week.  To help the environment and wallets.  We car-pool when we can.

Also, firing up the lawnmower once a week does way more environmental damage.  Want to save the environment, don't cut your grass.  And don't buy a Prius either.  The environmental impact from just making the car is huge.

Some higher performance engines can take advantage of higher octane fuel, as moon suggested, and those engines have decals around the fuel fill area with recommended octane ratings, as well as recommendations in your owner's manual.

It has a negligible effect on anything but those engines.

Cool thanks Moon.  I just remember reading something about when you are going for your emissions testing, that using a premium gas can help pass the test.  I thought maybe that meant in general that it was a cleaner gas.

I use an battery powered mower.  Not sure if that is better or worse than a gas one from an environmental stand point because the batteries have to be charged.

I accidentally put premium fuel in my motorcycle. Then ran like garbage. Ran fine once I put regular fuel back in .

The term "premium" is a misnomer. Should simply be branded by octane level.
