2025-26 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

But there's the rub. Leafs aren't worried about Jarry getting plucked off waivers. You keep Woll/Beast, send Jarry down.
But I assume Jarry to the minors, which would be a ruthless move the Leafs haven't done much of in the past, would be a cap hit still.

Edit: I guess the thought is he's be claimed?

Masterclass by Dubas. He dumped Jarry's $5.375M x 2.5 years and Samuel Poulin(25 year old bust) for Kulak, a 2nd in 29 and Skinner. He then traded Kulak to get Girard and a 2nd in 27 from the Avs. Wouldn't be shocked if he moved either of those guys.
So Jarry and a bust prospect turned into Skinner, Girard and 2-2nds
I still don't understand how the leafs are better off without Dubas and Keefe.

I wasn't the biggest Keefe fan but at least he had an entertaining hockey style. And Dubas, I truly believe had a plan to pivot. I know people like to shit on him, but I think for the most part he was a smart guy with a plan.

Sliding doors moment, but yeh, I feel that sudden shift to sack/ to extend Dubas by Shanahan was a big turning point.

Especially as it was done suddenly with no plan.

Then we ended up appointing someone as GM whose main trait was being available. Not someone who actually was picked for their GM qualities.

In terms of Keefe, I think probably it was time to move on from him. But again they got that appointment wrong.

In another world we have a Dubas who pivoted, as I agree with you I think he was about to. And we have a coach more suited to the roster. And then we don’t have a GM making up the most hodge podge identity-less new identity roster for said coach.

But alas here we are.

Dubas didn't have the freedom to do what NEEDED to be done.

This nonsense with having to go to the board with every decision is stupid. Either you hire a GM you trust implicitly or GTFO.

Having a bunch of fuddy duddy geezers having final say is truly a crappy way to run a hockey team.

Well, it'll cost them to have him in the minors but he can get the call if and when Woll/Beast get hurt. If he gets grabbed on waivers, so be it. Leafs have the cap space and it'll cost the Oilers an extra asset to get rid of him. I doubt it would ever happen tho.

Didn't Pittsburgh put him on waivers last year and no one touched him?
Yup, he struggled badly last season. He played well to start this season.

Exactly. He also wanted to not go through Shanny to do deals. It's pretty well known he was moving on from the core 4. Both 88 and 16 had no protection and both would have gotten you a lot more then Roy.

They're not. Playing a style that calls for your best players to give up the puck and go get it is ridiculous. And Berube using AM34 like Denault is so messed up. Keefe's teams averaged 109pts , (based on pts%) a year. Dubas' teams, 106pts and that's including Babs. They own 3 of the top 4 regular season pts% finishes in Leafs history. Unfortunate for whatever reason, they couldn't get it done. We can only imagine what Keefe's team would have done with last year's team. He never had a D core like that nor the goaltending.
Oh well, troubled times now and sad thing is, many people saw this coming.

It was a fork in the road for the management but also for the team's ability to manage its assets competently. A month after Dubas was gone, the team also committed to losing a piece of the core for nothing, or close to it. I suspect the two things were related.

The other trait of Tre's is that he can execute what his bosses want.

Keefe got out coached in the playoffs every year. Great regular season guy. It was time for the team to move on there, they just made the wrong choice in replacement. As for Dubas, he’s made some good moves for Pittsburgh, but he still has one major fatal flaw - identifying quality NHL goaltenders.
