As for Dubas, he’s made some good moves for Pittsburgh, but he still has one major fatal flaw - identifying quality NHL goaltenders.

They’re as far from the bottom 5 as they are from the playoffs - and needs to get passed more teams to get there. Bottom 5 is not happening.

A new coach isn’t going to change enough this season, but it’s the optics. They’re not just losing, they’re being embarrassed. Also, I’d like for the games to be fun to watch again. A new system might make that happen.

Even if there is, it won’t be enough to change their reality. They’re not making the playoffs and they’re not finishing bottom 5.

Retool, not rebuild. Move out as many of the secondary and depth pieces as you can. Change the coach and GM. Keep the core, for now, but rethink the rest. It’s not working as is.

Without serious lottery luck, the 1st rounder is gone. The odds of them getting into the top 5 pre-lottery are about the same as them making the playoffs. That being said, the next week or so needs to be a rough one in terms of their results to really spur a sell off at the deadline...
