Cowan has done some things that show me he is capable of playing in the NHL right now. But the standard for a rookie shouldn't be capable of playing...it should be that he's forcing the issue. I don't think the team is appreciably better with Cowan in the lineup over Jarnkrok. I think Cowan is going to be a better player if he is getting regular minutes. Nylander spent two years bouncing back and forth between in the NHL and AHL. No offense to Cowan but he's not a better player than Nylander.
 
I think Cowan is getting a job shadowing experience with the team and will be going to the AHL in Nov to put into practice the laundry list of things to work on to win a permanent spot in the lineup.

Edit: This is not a good blanket approach to take with every prospect given the asset management hassles, but it could be very effective for someone like Cowan's personality and experience to date. Junior hockey, especially with the way the London Knights make it almost too easy compared to the OHL competition, probably feels like shinny compared to NHL game speed seen up close and personal.

I think Cowan will be going to the AHL knowing that he has the toolkit to hang with the big leagues, but needs to refine his mindset, tweak a few patterns, and build his body for the grind of a full regular season and long playoff drive.

I think this gets cited frequently, but is a bit inaccurate, as Nylander was never yo-yoed.

Nylander started his D+1 season back with MODO. 21 games through the season (after WJC), the Leafs recalled him to Toronto and put him on the Marlies as a junior aged player because he was drafted from the SHL, not CHL. They kept him on the Marlies the following season (D+2) until the trade deadline as the team was artificially suppressing their standing to accumulate more assets and tank for Matthews/Laine (see Marner being sent to junior). Maybe he could've had a call up earlier but he was concussed out of the WJC. He was called up at the end of Feb 2016 alongside Kapanen, Brown, Hyman to finish off the tank job centering PA Parenteau and Zach Hyman.

That being said, Nylander's game didn't mature until he was in the NHL, following the rather disastrous second contract half season.

PP2 entry and chance because OEL saw an opportunity and sifted over the blueline himself instead of forcing a drop pass.
 
Up 1-0 but not impressed with this effort. The Domi-Matthews-Knies line isn't good
