It definitely has merit; which is why he got $4M less than Marner. He's definitely not a defensive stalwart, but saying he plays roughly half the game is disingenuous.

Not really much of an outlier. Might be the highest he hits, but he's had two other seasons at a similar pace. 20/21 he had 41 in 51 games, which is a 65 goal pace. 21/22 he had 60 in 73 games, which is a 67 goal pace.

This point I agree with. It's really my only complaint about his tenure. He signed Marleau for too much then had to give away a 1st round pick to get rid of him. The trading picks is the only part I can complain about.

It's important to note Marner has a full no-movement clause. Rantanen does not. He only has a 9-team no-trade list. So it's logically simple, but practically extremely difficult. I feel Marner's either signing (which I expect) or walking.
