    2025 Offseason Thread: Spring Cleaning

Spezza didn't sign a multiyear deal with that as an expectation. He was clearly at the "this might be my last season" stage for each of those contracts. He didn't take a pay cut because he was promised a FO job.

Doesn't need to become public for the league to become aware of it. As part of team reporting for HRR, this kind of stuff gets reported to the league offices. If someone is employed as part of hockey operations, the league can find out their salary. If he takes a job with MLSE outside of hockey...

That's too bad, though, his continued disappearing act in the playoffs did dampen my enthusiasm for the Leafs to add him.

He's also not particularly inclined to play a heavy-type physical game, despite his size and his lineage. When he tries that in the playoffs, it clearly takes away from his production.

He's not talking about Marchand. Marchand is a good skater. It's Marchment, who is supposedly on the trade block, that he's talking about there.

Suter isn't actually all that slow. He's an average skater with a quick mind and a quick stick. He may not have great speed bursts, but his hockey IQ is strong and he doesn't find himself out of position defensively all that much. Pair him with a couple quick wingers who forecheck hard and you...

    2025-26 General Trades & Signings

If he can regain some of his scoring touch, it's not an awful deal, but, 8 years? For someone best suited on the 3rd line? And when you have a big contract to deal with this summer and the biggest one in the league next summer? That's a choice.

Yup. Like, goalies are voodoo and all, but, lots of players in his situation have turned out to be nothing special. The odds against him becoming more than organizational depth are long and not worth fretting about the fact he didn't get an invite to a development camp.

Sure. Would have felt much more shady if he got a job with the Flyers (or any team, really) than with the league, though. At least they didn't try to void his contract because of it. Cap hit still had to be LTIR'd somewhere.

Because they have enough of their own goalies to spend time on?

Because it wasn’t part of a prearranged team when signing his contract.

SCF: Florida Panthers vs. Edmonton Oilers

Bennett is supposedly re-signing at $8M per, which, with the other spots in the lineup they need to fill, makes it basically impossible for them to bring everyone back. Ekblad and/or Marchand (probably Marchand) are going somewhere else.

I guess it's officially time for pie-in-the-sky offseason wish lists, so, here's mine: Trade Kampf, Jarnkrok, and Robertson for picks and prospects (I think, when teams see what guys sign for as UFAs, Kampf's and Jarnkrok's will look quite palatable - not enough to get a good return, but enough...

SCF: Florida Panthers vs. Edmonton Oilers

They’ve been carried by one line and had some fortunate matchups, faced some questionable coaching, and saw goalie breakdowns.

Skinner sucks. And that’s likely the dagger.

Maybe, just maybe, if he wants to be seen as a leader, he should take some accountability for his failings. The other 3 haven’t been good enough in these situations, but Marner has been legitimately bad.

I wonder if that's an issue with the types of players the scouting staff were instructed to focus on. Seems like the focus was on smaller skilled guys under Dubas, and they have a harder road to the NHL than guys with a little more size (not even necessarily big guys, just NHL average sized)...
