So the Wiz gets rest of pre-season plus 8 regular season games - ouch!

Costs him more than half a million in salary :o

Good. That hit was totally uncalled for, didn't involve any actual game action and was clearly an elbow to the head. I might have even given him a longer suspension.

Yikes, just watched it for the first time. That was brutal. I'm actually surprised it wasn't more since pre-season games don't really mean squat.

537k doesn't mean much to you? I'd watch the View a few times for that.

Edit, wait that's not right, how much of the total fine comes from preseason games? 147k roughly? ( based on 3 games ) I think I'd still watch at least a couple episodes for that.

Much like the "called way too many obstruction calls" coming out of the lockout, it was meant to weed bad habits out of the game.  If you punish guys, it will have an effect.  Hopefully it doesn't wind up like the interference calls from the refs where they still "call it all the time" when really they only call it when they feel like it after letting considerably worse offenses off.

Here's to hoping that players actually learn the consequences as well.

Agree it seems harsh especially compared to the old ways but these suspensions are meant to be corrective not just punitive, and isn't that what is needed? The old ways were way too lenient with things just getting worse and worse. It's unfortunate that it took a severe injury to arguably the game's best player (Crosby) to wake the league office but I'm glad that with Shanahan they seem to have taken a turn towards improvement.

I think what seems most different is that he isn't letting players off the hook when they get lucky enough not to severely injure their opponent. I think a large part of why the initial vicious hit to Crosby's head went unpunished is that he shook it off and kept playing. It's great to see the league taking strict preventative action instead of essentially waiting for the next brutal injury to flex underdeveloped muscles.

Looks like Vigneault is at it again. This was one of the things that had me really turned off the Canucks last playoffs - the constant whining. A shoulder to the chest is somehow comparable to a hit to the head now?

Don't forget the riot was the NHL's fault.

There was also an interesting article around about how the Canucks circumvented the exhibition game requirements for players with NHL experience. The canucks invited a raft of players on tryouts to fulfill the
ex games requirements and then dumped them. The Sedins, Burrows et al have not even played an ex game yet.

Here's Brendan Shanahan's detailed video of the incident and the various considerations for the suspension:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95eiCINM94I

It looks like Shanahan is doing these videos for all suspensions.  Thumbs up for Shanahan's clarity, accountability, and setting a tough standard for disciplining unacceptable behaviour.  The NHL discipline department has been lacking in all of these qualities for years.

They're pretty entertaining too. It's like COPS haha. "Going forward, Brad Boyes will be considered a repeat offender." I love Shanny as the disciplinarian.

We could just about use a disciplinary thread...  ;)

HFBroads, I think.

It's not HF. He say it's a forum where people who were banned from HF/didn't like the way it was run went to.

That wasn't a typo.  Although it redirects to hockeybroads.com now, I think it was originally hfbroads.com.

Streamlined and smaller cap shoulder pads will be mandatory as early as next season.

Hopefully it will reduce some injuries...

Hopefully... Some folks site this as one of if not the major problems surrounding head injuries... I think its probably a good thing to shrink the body armor.
