2011-2012 NHL Thread

Big Boston win putting the champs up and over .500. Definitely think that their opening swoon was not representative of their overall quality.

And just to twist the knife, Seguin with two goals and an assist. 11 goals, 20 points in 15 games and still months away from turning 20.

They've scored 5 or more goals in like 6 straight or something.

Oh, and Buffalo is none too pleased with Lucic hitting Miller.  Neither is Miller himself:

FriedgeHNIC Elliotte Friedman
Big stuff on Miller/Lucic collision RT @BuffNewsVogl "I just stuck around because I wanted to say what a piece of [feces] I think Lucic is."

BuffNewsVogl John Vogl
#Sabres Miller con't.: "Fifty pounds on me, and he runs me like that? It's unbelievable. ... That was gutless. Gutless. Piece of [feces]."

Sounds like the NHL and NHLPA are on the verge of another battle.

Rats!

Hate the Bruins and all, but this was a really nice gesture (I'm sure the son had something to do with it too).

That was very nice... Those things choke me up. The other day I watched a vid of a soldier surprising his little girl at school and it really got me good.

Never get tired of seeing stuff like that.

I was amused a little when Chara posed with them. I realize he's got his skates on and they do not and I've seen Chara live before but I still can't get over his size. He's so big when he stands beside folks like that.

What's going on with these 2:

Ryan Getzlaf:  17 games, 4 goals, 5 assists, 9 points, -9

Eric Staal:  17 games, 4 goals, 3 assists, 7 points, -17

Kind of a meandering article about what makes a Hall of Famer.

Tired of being on crappy teams, maybe?

I don't care where Miller was, goalies should be off limits. Arguably the best goalie in the league is out with a concussion because Lucic absolutely intended on flattening him just because he was out of the crease. They should throw the book at him. I love Lucic but he was way offside with this "hit".

While I agree with your premise, Miller has been far from even being arguably the best goalie in the league this season.

This is where I strongly agree with Mark Howe's comments on the current state of the league.  This happens in the eighties and the benches are cleared.  The players are much better at policing themselves than the league is IMO.

Yep, Mark said it very well too. Someone should play that clip at the Board of Governors meeting.

A crosscheck to Lucic's teeth after that goalie run would of have been justified and Lucic would think twice about doing it next time and we could all move on... Now we have some stupid phone call with Shanahan where he will likely get one or two games and everyone is left stewing over the hit and Miller is out with just a wrist slap to Lucic.

I hope that Buffalo "feeds him lunch" later this season.

Bob McKenzie was tweeting about this and agreeing with your notion that goalies, according to the rules, are not "fair game" if they leave their crease.

Also suggested on twitter was goalies need to be treated like Quarterbacks are now in the NFL - too valuable to teams to not have different rules apply.  Goalies always have had more rule protection, but maybe the bar has to be raised.

Guys like Gionta and Lucic know the most they likely get is 2 minutes but messing with a division rival's starting goalie is invaluable. Ask Nik Kypreos or Grant Fuhr about that.

And without the instigator, Chara proceeds to pound every player on the Sabres team into the ice , two or three of them at a time.

Its one of the reasons the Bruins are so damned cocky.. they know they have a 6'7" captain who nobody out there will fight.

So you can have frontier justice and players policing themselves but you better find someone who can take on Chara pretty quick, otherwise Boston wins every time.

Three fights and Chara gets booted from the game. Could be a potential strategy, if you've got 3 guys willing to take that kind of punishment. Though, the truth is, since becoming a premier defenceman in the NHL, Chara has stopped dropping the gloves, and certainly hasn't tangled with any real heavyweights - despite the fact his team was near the top of the league in fighting majors last season (2nd to St Louis) and is up there again this season (7th as of today). The real issue in Boston is that they have a bunch of other guys who are more than happy to drop the gloves, and are more than capable of holding their own.

No suspension...crazy

Honestly, as much as it was a solid hit on a goalie, I'm not sure it was suspension worthy. Lucic was chasing down a loose puck, which Miller moved out of the way a fraction of a second before impact. There was no way Lucic could have eased up in terms of his momentum - there just wasn't enough time - nor do I think he could have really avoided the collision. While he made no attempt avoid Miller and took advantage of the opportunity a little, he doesn't really make contact with Miller's head - the brunt of the impact is to the back of Miller's shoulder. I'd also be hard-pressed to say he targeted the head - doesn't raise his forearm particularly high (they're chest level at the moment of impact). Most of the damage here really stems from the fact that Lucic has almost 50 pounds on Miller and was legitimately coming in at close to full speed. With the rules as they are right now, I'd say this is the right call.
