2012 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

Statement from Selig includes this: "I am sensitive to the concerns of the fans of Miami regarding this trade and understand the reactions.......will "continue to monitor" situation, says #Marlins owners have assured him of commitment to build long-term winning team"

Selig: deal "does not violate any express rule of MLB + does not otherwise warrant exercise of any of my powers to prevent its completion"

I don't think there was ever any real chance it would be vetoed. After all, Selig is the guy who oversaw the last two times the Marlins did this.

Somebody's a little happy.  :)

Never thought I would say this, but I am really excited for the upcoming baseball season.

Me too. It's pretty nice.

Selig let the mid-season Boston/LA trade go through which had similar circumstances so there should be no surprise that this trade went through. The Marlins didn't win with this group anyhow, and even if this deal gives a massive middle finger to Marlins fans, it's probably better for the team in the long run.

Another happy fan here.  Can hardly wait for next season!  :)

Interesting analysis of the trade from Forbes.com:

All the players, with the probable exception of Buehrle, carry risks. But here?s the thing: the six of them combined for a Wins Above Replacement (WAR ? the number of wins a player is calculated to bring to a team over and above a minimum salaried replacement) of 16.8 in 2012. Their expected total cost in 2013: $54 million. That?s a hefty 71% of the Blue Jays entire 2012 payroll, yet still just $3.2 million per WAR point, well below the $4 million average that each WAR points costs on the free agent market, according to data recounted on various baseball blogs. So it seems that Anthopoulos found a relatively cheap way to upgrade.

John Gibbons to be named manager Tuesday morning according to Bob Elliot.

Wouldn't be my first choice.

I'm thinking Elliot got duped like Dave Shoalts with the Ice Edge - Man U fiasco. How the hell on earth can it be John Gibbons!? We'd hire this guy AGAIN over Manny Acta, Wallach, Hargrove, Butterfield, Wakamatsu, or Riggleman?

John Gibbons brings back memories of Alex Rios, Russ Adams, Shea Hillenbrand, Ted Lilly, Gustavo Chacin, Josh Towers, and Miguel Batista. Those are names I do not want to remember. This team was 305-305 under Gibbons - the pinnacle of mediocrity.

He also led the Jays to their only better-than-3rd place finish since 1993.

And yet at the time of his firing the Jays were last in the AL East.
