2013-2014 NHL Thread

Edmonton Oilers - worst run franchise in the NHL?

They apparently want more draft picks this year at the deadline rather than acquiring players who might actually make their team better.

Well, considering the type of players that generally get moved that the deadline, that's not exactly a poor decision for them. They shouldn't be giving up assets for pending UFAs, and that's mostly what's available right now. So, accumulating assets by shipping off guys they don't expect to be back next season is the right move. The fact that they're in this position again, though . . .

I'm not giving him the GM of the Year award or anything, but I'd take Snow over those other two GMs. They seem completely oblivious as to where their teams problems are.

I don't know if Snow is any better. At times, he seems not to know where his team's problems are, either, and, when he does, he doesn't seem to have any real idea of how to solve them. I mean, look at their goalie situation, their blue line and their forward depth. He really hasn't done much to improve anything there.

Considering where they are this season can you really fault them for thinking they've got a lot more work to do?

Not so much about the trading UFAs/guys who aren't cutting it, but that they insist on keeping their 1st overall pick core when they have a brutal defense don't do anything about it.

Well, they've clearly made some terrible decisions(in particular the decision to draft Yakupov seems insane at this point) but they're clearly looking to improve it in ways. Signing Ference, adding Schultz, clearly it's an area they're trying to address.

I mean, given how much of a clown show it is over there their efforts aren't paying off but this, at least, seems like they realize how messed up it is.

I don't follow the Oilers but I see he scored 17 goals last year. Is he regarded as being a bust?

I don't think it's that so much as it is that he's not a very good fit and there's such a need on defense that drafting another scoring winger ahead of the 4 seemingly elite defensive prospects in that draft is really hard to justify right now.

Well, they did take Nurse at 7th overall.

They did do that a year later but I think that might ultimately be a case of too little, too late and, while I know Nurse is well regarded as a prospect, they had an opportunity in the 2012 draft to take a bunch of really talented defensemen, many of whom are already in the NHL and contributing at a high level. To take Yakupov there really was a head scratcher especially when there's a lot of reports out there that they could have reaped a huge windfall by trading down and taking a defender.

Marty St. Louis has requested a trade from the #Lightning, Newsday confirmed.

Better be that he wants a last chance to win a stanley cup. But if it has anything to do with Yzerman not selecting him the first time for Team Canada, THEN GROW THE F UP MARTIN!

I mean, there's only 7 teams in the league ahead of the Lightning in the standings so it's pretty tough to think that this is motivated by wanting a better chance at a cup.

Maybe he requested it before he was named to the team because he didn't want the questions about not being named, and his relationship with Yzerman, following him all season in Tampa?

... and one would think that when a player with initials S S returns, that will help them even more ...

Clarkson, Percy and..... for Kesler?

I don't think anyone's going to see Clarkson's contract as a significant asset right now. Vancouver's probably going to want real hockey value for Kesler.

Multiple comments out here in Vancouver that Kessler is not "good in the room". This has surfaced more than once over his time here.

That's the classic line when they're trying to run a guy out of town.  Kesler was highly regarded in Vancouver a few years back, strange how he seems to have fallen out of favor so quickly.
