I want our 4th round pick back from the Frogren contract situation.

+1. That is ridiculous.

I want our pick back too...I cant understand why anyone who was punished under "the spirit" aka "Not actually a written rule...but you know the vague general broad definition we feel like applying when you do something that makes bettman look like an idiot" shouldnt get their picks back...I mean why forgive one and not the others? Cause Favoritism.

This is F'ing bullcrap.

You're either guilty or not - and the league found them guilty.

Guy robs a bank and the bank subsequently closes down or moves doesn't reduce the frigging sentence. The Devils get away with absolute murder.

No, but their punishment is often reduced upon appeal. My guess is the league decided they came down too harshly, and that this decision has nothing to do with Kovalchuk retiring. I don't agree with the decision, but, putting it all on Kovalchuk not being with the team anymore is really speculative and jumping to a conclusion.

Because nobody else got punished for the same reason, despite the fact that a lot of contracts violated the same bogus "spirit".

Yeah I double checked...I remembered the situation incorrectly...we lost the pick because we offered Frogren too much of a signing bonus because we disagreed with his entry level status...we lost the pick we gained in violating "the spirit" of the CBA a little while earlier basically buying the 4th rounder. Reports at the time said it felt like the NHL wasnt pleased at how we bought the pick and were looking for anything to take it away.

Still want it back

Still state Favoritism.

And it just seems fishy, as DGB alludes to on twitter: Lamoriello didn't give up the 29th overall pick for some reason, and then the NHL announces this the day after the trade deadline this season which I'm sure is a coincidence.

Everything about it just reeks.

Yeah, that pretty much seals it for me.  And I'm not sure why Kovalchuk doing exactly what the league was concerned about (leaving his contract early) should be justification for lessening the penalty.  It doesn't matter that he left a lot earlier than people expected, he still did it.

This is absolutely garbage.

It's amazing how they conveniently held on to the 29th overall pick in the draft and now get to keep what is currently the 10th overall pick.

I think I read that they are given the 30th pick?

That's what I get for not reading.  Even still, I think it's a load to change the punishment a year after the penalty was technically able to be enforced.

There was talk at the time that the intended to give up that pick, but, they though they had a 48 hour window after the end of the Cup finals to make a decision, whereas they only had a 24 hour window. I'm not sure how true that is, but, if it is, holding on to that pick is much less of a convenient decision and more of a mistake. That also help explain a little bit of the league's decision here - they may have realized they didn't communicate things properly there, so, instead of punishing the Devils for what was partly their mistake, they're mitigating the damage without completely letting the team off the hook - they get to keep the pick, but, it has to be 30th overall and they can't trade it.

Canucks losing 5-0 in the 2nd.  Oh I just feel so bad for them.

Thank Twitter Bobby. It will be the only way you stay relevant during your stint in Florida.

A good night for the Leafs playoff chances.

Montreal lost to Phoenix - Leafs are 3 points back with a game in hand
Colorado beat Detroit in OT - Leafs are 5 points ahead, Detroit has 2 games in hand
Chicago beat Columbus - Leafs are 5 points ahead, Columbus has 1 game in hand
Boston beat Washington - Leafs are 6 points ahead with no outstanding GP
Buffalo beat Tampa - Leafs are 1 point ahead, Tampa has a game in hand

Yeah even though there's so many games left I found myself scoreboard watching last night. Was a good night for the Leafs.

Tyler Seguin had a hat trick and two assists last night in fifteen minutes of ice time. Now sits 12th in the league in goals, 8th in points. Doesn't turn 23 for 10 months.

Looks like noted "friend of the Leafs", Canucks thug forward Zack Kassian, may be looking at a suspension for "accidentally" hitting Brenden Dillon from behind. The article also mentions the Luongo tweet.
