2013-2014 NHL Thread

Any way, I thought the following article was very good and it's from the same ball park as what we have been talking about.

http://theleafsnation.com/2014/6/16/how-far-are-the-leafs-from-the-stanley-cup

OK, I searched the article, I searched the site, I searched the entire web: what the hell is STE referring to? (never mind found it: Special Teams Efficiency, as a note for writers please put the acronym beside something like that before you start using it so people can find it in a search)

Where no cup has gone before? To captain Kirk's apartment apparently.

Look. He's doodling on it!  >:(

Rumour has it the Kings have offered Gaborik a 3 year, 15M deal.

Los Angeles wants to keep leading playoff goal scorer Marian Gaborik ? they?ve offered three years and $15 million, which would require a hometown discount of sorts.

Would be a nice deal for LA, but that's a short term and low price for Gaborik.

Honestly, considering his play over the last 2 seasons, that's more than fair. He had a great playoffs, but, he hasn't managed to stay healthy and productive. He has 23 goals and 57 points over 88 games in that span. That's the sort of production that gets you ~$5M per and an injury history that, at his age, prevents you from getting a long-term deal.

Home town discount doesn't even cut it really. He could easily get a 5-year, $35mil type deal, like what Semin got.

Not at his age, with his injury history and coming off two years of inconsistent production. Semin was coming off a point a game season when he got his deal, was 3 years younger than Gaborik is now and, while he doesn't exactly have the healthiest track record, it is cleaner than Gaborik's - both in terms of career-wide and recent.

We're talking about NHL GMs here, and Gaborik likely be the biggest fish available on July 1st.

I'm not so sure he's that big a fish anymore, to be honest. His playoffs will have more teams interested, but I don't see anyone offering him 5 years, and I think the only way he gets $7M per is on a 1 or 2 year deal. Vanek and Stastny are much bigger fish.

Maybe, but I'm sure Vanek's next contract is going to take a decent sized hit following his atrocious playoffs. And Stastny doesn't seem to be getting the attention he deserves. I do think teams will put much more emphasis on Gaborik's past 45 games as a King than they will the past 69 disappointing ones that proceeded them. Especially considering half of that came as a Blue Jacket where he really just didn't seem to fit. His age and injury concerns will keep him from getting a 6 or 7 year deal but I can still easily see teams offering him big money for 4 or 5 years.

I doubt we'll actually find out which of us are right though, as I think Gaborik will eventually agree to some type of Stanley Cup discount with LA.

Yeah but the Leafs are offering 4 million+ supposedly to Bolland's 26 points in 58 games ove rthe past two years.

True, but, Bolland brings all those made up things like "intangibles" and "heart" that bad management groups love to overpay for.

Made up things? Puh....lease. I suppose things like 'drive' and 'desire' come from fairy dust sprinkles too?

Why is it assumed that Bolland has more desire and drive than others on the team?

Because.  He certainly has more drive than lazy 22 point Marian Gaborik.    You could just feel Bolland's 6 playoff points much more in 2012-2013.

I suppose firstly, you have to believe there are players that have more drive and desire than others. Then you have to watch that player closely on a game by game basis. Finally, you have to listen and believe what others closer to the play on the ice are saying about that player.
