2013 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

Jays lose again, 8-5 to the Orioles.

They had their chances, but went 2-10 with RISP. In particular, Bautista struck out twice with runners at 1st and 2nd and less than 2 outs (he was 0-5 with 4 Ks), and EE struck out and grounded into a double play.

20 LOB as opposed to 5 by Baltimore. Also out-hit them 14-9.

At what point does one do something? The bench is awful and there's no depth, so barring a trade I guess there aren't many options. I think Gibbons should go, but just as we've seen with Bonifacio, AA is probably way too proud to make that move.

Did Gibby always sit leaning back in his chair when reporters came to interview him? I have noticed that the last few times I have seen him on the sports newscasts. Kinda makes him look defensive.

Yeah, Jays seem to not have enough of that clutch hitting thing going right now - they are better than they have been in recent years, but....

Yeah,  he's always been laid back like that.  What disappoints me is that he openly acknowledges that the team sucks when they don't hit homeruns but rather than using it as an argument to promote good fundamental hitting he boasts about the times they jack up 8 runs with 3 home runs.

Hitting home runs is great if you have a balanced lineup but the Jays are borderline incompetent at capitalizing on mistakes far too often.

Was busy Saturday at the Ticats game here in Guelph, so I missed the Jays' win.

Just checked today's game and Johnson is now 1-5 after yet another loss. Davis tied the AL record for HRs before the all star break with 37. I wonder if anyone is questioning whether he is doing it cleanly....

Methinks not.  Then again, who is to know.  I'm certain baseball fans out there are asking the same questions.

AA is in on Garza pretty big, according the rumors.

Getting a bit scary if he cashes in another pile of prospect chips to rent Gaza and hope he can sign him. At least he can offer him money earmarked for Josh Johnson since that ship better have sailed by now.

Who is reporting that? I don't buy it.

I don't doubt the Jays could be interested but by most accounts, there's a bunch of suitors and I'm not sure the Jays are better equipped to step up than any of them.

Here is one report suggesting the Jays are in on Garza:

http://nesn.com/2013/07/report-blue-jays-rangers-remain-front-runners-to-land-matt-garza-red-sox-have-expressed-strong-interest/

Seems as though the Jays have been linked to Garza a few seasons now.  I've always liked to see him as a Jay.  But if AA is to make a move for him now, further expending an asset or two from an already depleted prospect base, it better come with an extension in tow.  To trade for him with the thought of salvaging this season would be foolish.  Although I certainly don't buy the last point as some of the media out there are suggesting.

If the Jays trade for Garza, it will 100% be with an extension in tow or in the near future. I trust that AA is aware enough that adding Garza as a rental isn't going to help the team turn things around this season, and that he'd really be getting him as a piece for the long haul.

Was nice to see Cecil and Delebar do well at the All Star game even if it was only 1 batter each.  The lone part of this team that has looked like a contender - the bullpen - was well represented.

First game after the allstar break ends the same way the game before did, with a loss.

This time, unusually, it was the bullpen that coughed it up in a 4-4 tie and they lost 8-5. Jays runs all came on home runs, four of them. And with Buehrle already down 3-0 in the 3rd today, I am not sure if I am going to follow them as closely down the stretch. A very disappointing season. I was worried about the overhyping before the start of the year that they would fall flat on their faces.

Maybe it is time to start looking towards next season. :(

The Jays could learn a lot from the Rays. If they could approach their at bats with the same type of patience and the same focus on the fundamentals, they could put up a lot more runs, because I think the Jays have much more potent bats in their lineup. Cut down the Ks, bring up the walks and do the little things right, and this team could win a lot of games. Instead of relying on the long-ball to get them back into games, they could, you know, manufacture runs and stay in most games and play with the lead a little more.

I'm just fed up with this team.  Horrible starting pitching.  Horrible defense and fundamentals.  And you've got the strike-out duo of all duos who are probably the most frustrating players to watch.

I hope they can put together a decent stretch.  No expectations.

I agree with both of you. They are frustrating to watch, and they don't make opposing pitchers work as hard as they should.

Now that Lawrie is back in the lineup, they have a strikeout trio. Hopefully he starts getting the hang of 2nd base - 2 errors in 2 games already.

The 8th and 9th innings kinda epitomized the Jays' season so far. Bases loaded none out in the 8th down by 2 and they can't get a run across.

In particular, Colby Rasmus (who has played better of late), fouled out to the catcher. After the guys on the radio had mentioned his weekend stat of being 0-4 with runners on base in the weekend series to that point leaving 9 runners (that's at least two guys on base each time on average), I was thinking "pinch hit"!!! Lose-lose situation for Gibby, though. Izturis fanned and predictably so did Arencibia.

The 9th inning they were pretty lucky to get the one run they did - poor coaching led to that run AND the winning run being in scoring position (1B was holding Lawrie with two outs instead of playing back. The ball was hit where he would have been. And how do Bautista AND EE steal bases to get to 3rd and 2nd respectively without throws?). I felt bad for Lind flying out weakly to centre - after the steals I though they would have walked him to allow Colby to screw up again. AGH.

Okay, so this was a bit of a rant. I was much more frustrated about it yesterday than I am today. I heard that Buehrle commented that this is an overhyped and overrated team. They have sure played like it.
