2013 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

Too bad if that is the case.  He had a phenomenal career.  To me he is a HOF pitcher, but his numbers won't meet the base-stat requirement of the media.  Certainly hope he ends up there some day with the Jays as his logo.

203-105 (.659 win%)  2749.1 IP 3.38 ERA 1.178 WHIP  2117 SO  65.8 WAR

I suspect we're going to see the supposed standards for pitchers getting into the HoF drop. The days of the 300 career win starter appear to be pretty much over. At the very least, it looks like it will be a long time until we see another one. There really isn't anyone who's close enough to do it without winning close to 20 games every season for the rest of their career.

Halladay and Blue Jays will announce a 1-day contract at press conference so he retires as a jay

That has class written all over it.  Kudos to the Jays and to Doc.

I think the interesting cases going forward are going to be Pedro Martinez and Curt Schilling who have 219 and 216 wins respectively. Pedro is probably a no questions asked hall of famer what with the 3 cy youngs and 86 WAR and Schilling's case is going to be built on an 80 WAR and his post-season success.

Ultimately, it may be the lack of that sort of notoriety that will doom Halladay's case more than win or strikeout totals. Well, that and the WAR. There are some hall of fame pitchers around Halladay with his WAR totals but there are recent guys like David Cone and Kevin Brown who are right there with him that didn't even get the 5% of the vote needed to stay on the ballot.

It's probably worth noting that there are only 3 eligible pitchers with multiple Cy Young award wins that haven't been elected to the HoF, and all 3 have non-playing reasons for why that might be so. The most obvious is Roger Clemens and steroids. There's Denny McLain, who was involved in a lot of gambling and other illegal activity, and spent time in prison shortly after his career ended (and he also shared his 2nd Cy Young); and Bret Saberhagen, whose stance on Pete Rose may have irked enough voters to keep him out (though, I'll admit, this is tenuous at best).

As the BBWAA gets more sabermetrically inclined, though, that sort of thing is going to be a tough sell.

Sure, but they're not there yet, and, considering how slow they seem to be to adapt, I'm not sure they'll be there by the time Halladay is eligible either.

I think it's happening quicker than you might think. If Jack Morris, for instance, had shown up on the ballot even five years earlier I think there's a very real chance that he would have skated into the hall.

Admittedly, the Cabrera over Trout MVP choices don't really lend weight to that but that's a much smaller sample.

Rangers, Blue Jays agreed on deal sending Sergio Santos to Texas but another player failed physical, sources tell @Ken_Rosenthal and me.

It was a 3 way deal, apparently. Interesting. I now expect Santos to be moved.

I'm in favour of that.  He's not healthy enough to justify being on the roster and his control is questionable.  The Jays have enough decent arms deserving of rosters spots too.  I doubt they get a lot for him though.

According to Shi Davidi, the deal that didn't go through would have netted the Jays a starting pitcher. I can't imagine it would have been a very good one, but that's still more that I would have expected.

Doc is one of only 5 pitchers who has Cy Young Awards from both leagues. Add to that 67 complete games and 2000+ Ks. I think that will equal a plaque in Cooperstown. Worst case his number goes on the Jays Level of Excellence.

Happy that Halladay will retire a Blue Jay. This is where his heart has always been.  Well done.

Classy Halladay...

I'm told Halladay hoped to return to pitch for #BlueJays, gave it a go in Oct in instructional league, threw 82-86 mph, shut it down. #MLB

:'(

Too bad he didn't have it in him to give it the entire offseason.  Halladay declined due to health but I wonder what a full offseason of recovery could have done for his velocity.  He would have been an awesome addition to the back of the rotation.

Have to respect his pride in his performance that he doesn't want to just pocket money and get rocked around to end his career.
