In the company of Jagr...

The 30 for 30 documentary Of Miracles and Men is on Netflix. It charts the story of the miracle on ice from the Soviet perspective as well as Soviet hockey in general.

To say I loved it was an understatement, do yourself a favor and go watch it.

Pretty cool story on the first Russian to ref a NHL game last night:

https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/news/more-than-25-years-after-russian-players-arrive-in-the-nhl--evgeny-romasko-becomes-first-russian-referee-135105603.html

It's weird hearing people talk about referee's as "prospects" and guys you "got to sign". But I'm glad Romasko is getting a chance here. Sounds like a good guy.

What if your team was clinging to a playoff spot, were down 4-1 in the 2nd, stormed back in the 3rd to make it 4-4 (after having 4 straight penalties against you) and then this happened:

At least it wasn't game 7.

That seems like good company to be in.

Good for Ovie.  Gretzky and Bossy have 9 seasons (while Lemieux & Dionne each have 8).  Ovechkin needs 2 more seasons to reach an even higher plateau with two of the game's greatest.

Even more impressive is the fact that Ovechkin scored his 45th goal Wednesday night before he reached the age of 30, again joining Gretzky & Bossy in that feat.

Just realized that Ovi would have definitely been at 8 too if it wasn't for the shortened season. He had 32 in 48 games that year. And heck, if it wasn't for the 2004-05 lockout he may already have been at 9 by now. He scored 52 goals in his rookie year when the league came back.

The scary this is, I think he looks better this season than he has in a while, so he may have a few more in the tank.

His pace is obviously going to wane as he gets older but he has so much about his game that he will probably be effective for the majority of his career as a goalscorer.  He also seems to have that love for the game that makes me wonder if he might be a guy who plays for a long time.

Wayne Gretzky - 894 goals in 1487 GP  (Ovechkin = 931 goals)
Mike Bossy - 573 goals in 752 GP        (Ovechkin = 470 goals)
Mario Lemieux - 690 goals in 915 GP  (Ovechkin = 573 goals)
Marcel Dionne - 731 goals in 1348 GP (Ovechkin = 843 goals)
Brett Hull - 741 goals in 1269 GP        (Ovechkin = 794 goals)
Jaromir Jagr - 717 goals in 1534 GP    (Ovechkin = 960 goals)
Alex Ovechkin - 467 goals in 746GP

For Ovechkin to play in this crappy scoring era with the calibre of goaltending that the NHL currently employs and still have a very outside shot of catching Gretzky is really a testament to his overall skill set as a goal scorer.  As Carlton mentioned, Ovechkin was likely robbed of anywhere from 50-70 goals because of the two lockouts

Meanwhile in San Jose:

Sharks general manager Doug Wilson pulled the curtain back Thursday night on the thinking behind the team's decision last August to take the captaincy away from veteran center Joe Thornton.

The topic was raised in a question-answer session with about 350 season-ticket holders before the Sharks faced the Nashville Predators, and Wilson prefaced his remarks by saying he is a huge Thornton fan.

"He cares about the game so much. The reason we took the 'C' off him ... Joe carries the weight of the team on his shoulders, and he's got such a big heart that when stress comes on him, he lashes out at people," Wilson said, "and it kind of impacts them.

"The pressure and stress, I felt, was getting to Joe," the general manager said. "And I sat him down and said we need other players to step up and share this. He got it. He didn't like it, but he got it and he understood it."

Thornton was asked about Wilson's comments....

@PollakOnSharks

Simmering issues boiling over in SJ. #SJSharks Thornton on latest from GM Wilson on taking away the 'C':  "Doug needs to shut his mouth."

Thornton is done there, you can't pick a public fight with the GM and survive.

Maybe although hasn't the issue been there for a while that Thornton won't waive his NTC? Considering that Wilson's job may very well be on the line if the Sharks don't make the playoffs I wouldn't be too quick to assume Thornton's mind will change.

Anyone taken a look at the President's Trophy race lately?

6 teams at 91.  Another at 90.  A few more behind with games in hand.

Go everyone except for Nashville (for TML pick reasons) and Montreal (for natural reasons).
