2015-2016 NHL Thread

You guys are probably right about the defense...I kept thinking that Gardiner would be a fit there, but there would obviously have to be some salary coming back though.

I don't think that's necessarily the case. Gardiner isn't overpaid.

Salary coming back or being retained is basically the new reality of trades in the NHL - especially when dealing players on multi-year contracts, regardless of the quality of the player. It's less a reflection on the player and more about how teams have started to manage their cap.

I just meant to fit him under their cap, as they seem to be pretty tight.

Ah, fair enough. I tend to think of "salary" in that sense to mean, essentially, something that isn't an asset but that doesn't have to be the case.

Dustin Brown's hit on Logan Couture.

Someone needs to let Dustin know that checking a players face with your helmet isn't the best way to go about things.

And Milan Lucic doesn't understand why he got a match penalty for this:

Darryl Sutter wasn't even sure it warranted a minor penalty.

Quick. Someone tell me how many points McDavid scores in his NHL debut tonight? 8)

Big fat 0.  Though he had two shots on goal, got better as the game wore on -- used his speed to effect and had some chances on net-- the way he played shows that he's going to click soon enough.

On the other side of the fence, Buffalo's Jack Eichel scored a goal, had 3 shots on goal, played quite a bit and got better as the game wore on.  (Sabres lost 3-1 to the Senators in Buffalo).

I thought this was pretty funny.

Paul Bissonnette is going to profile all the Kings prospects playing with him in the AHL this year, good stuff.

Jagr scored two goals in his season debut.  3rd in goal scoring and 3rd in points might be in reach this year.  2nd in Points and Goals might be in reach if he holds up and plays at least 2 years.  That's pretty nuts.

He'd already be 2nd in both had he not spent time in the KHL or lost time to lockouts.

I was trying to find a list of oldest goal scorers in NHL history.  I think he's now the 6th oldest player to score a goal in NHL history. Gordie Howe (52), Chris Chelios (46), Doug Harvey (44), Tim Horton (44), and Teemu Selanne (43) are ahead of him.

He's the 12th oldest player to play in an NHL game at this point.  Only Howe, Chelios, Horton, Selanne, and Claude Lemieux played at an older age as position players.  Maurice Roberts, Johnny Bower, Gump Worsley, Lester Patrick, and Jacques Plante played into the 44+ years as goaltenders.

I really don't think enough is being said about Jaromir Jagr by the NHL. He's a legend of the game.  He's still playing at a high level and you barely get any significant marketing of just how incredible Jagr is.

Perhaps they don't feel like he'll play the marketing game?

Seems like a straight shooter and unlikely to play that game with the media.

They also probably don't see the appeal of him with the younger demographic which is who they usually focus their marketing towards.

I also think something has to be said about the fact that despite being as great as he has been, he doesn't really associate super strongly with any particular fanbase the way Messier does with Edmonton or New York or Howe with Detroit.

He's on his 8th team and with just about every one of them either he didn't play there long or he left under not great circumstances. If he were playing for Pittsburgh right now I think there'd be a different feeling towards him.

Speaking of Jagr, TSN posted a nice little interview with him this morning: http://www.tsn.ca/five-minutes-with-jaromir-jagr-1.376054

Mentions that he wants to play hockey until he's 50, but obviously not in the NHL.

I think that his reputation prior to leaving for the KHL likely hurt his public opinion quite a bit. I don't remember him really leaving the Pens, Caps, or Rangers on the greatest terms. Particularly the Caps, right? He's really turned that reputation around though since he came back. Seems like a completely different person.

From Friedman's 30 Thoughts, Bettman on expansion by 2016-17:

On the Anaheim broadcast of Monday?s Vancouver Canucks vs. Anaheim Ducks game, Commissioner Gary Bettman made his most emphatic statement yet that there will be no expansion for the 2016-17 season. Asked by Brian Hayward if there was a chance Las Vegas or Quebec City could be in the the NHL next season, Bettman replied, ?No, no possibility at all.?

?There?s a lot of capability there. I don?t know if there?s a desire or will within the board of the existing franchises for expansion yet, but they both made very interesting proposals. Both have very legitimate arenas in place and organizations in place. There?s a capacity out there, I don?t know if there?s a will from a league standpoint.?

Jeremy Jacobs, chair of the BoG, throwing some cold water on the possibility of expansion.
