2015 NHL Entry Draft

Central scouting released their mid-term rankings:

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=749385

Marner, Zacha, Barzal ranked 7-9 on the NA side, Rantanen number 2 on the Euro side. As long as we finish bottom-11 we'll be able to grab one of those forwards. Strome probably goes 5 or 6, but we'll look at that if/when we get there.

I'm going to go on my usual pro-Knights rant here, but Mitch Marner (assuming the Leafs manage to snag a top 5 draft slot) would be awesome.  Not the center that we need, but this guy is going to be fantastic.

Completely forgot about the Mark Hunter connection there too.

MacT says that he'd be willing to trade his first, even if he wins the lottery, for established players. Granted I'm sure they wouldn't actually trade the pick, but that would be hilarious. Also, they could literally take whatever they wanted from us for it.

They can have the whole team.  Promote the Marlies and have McDavid center all 4 lines, and put Bibeau in net.

I sure hope the Leafs are able to make some moves for picks.  As it stands we don't even have a second, which is a little depressing.  Kessel would fetch a couple of nice ones most likely.

Bozak is established! Stepped right into an NHL first line!

Ugh. I completely forgot about that. Why does this team hate 2nd round picks? We really need to swing some assets into a late 1st or early 2nd.

Would be 2 straight drafts without one and, funny enough, all involving Frattin in some way: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_NHL_Entry_Draft#Round_two

Did I say a little depressing?  I can't read my last post through my tears.

Wasn't the 2014 draft traded in the Holland deal?

I forgot about that.  I think if Holland played a certain number of games the pick becomes/became a second.  I think that may have been a topic of conversation around here when Holland was playing last year.

EDIT:  Update: The third-round selection will become a second-round pick if Holland plays in at least 25 contests with Toronto, according to CBC?s Elliotte Friedman.

He played in 39 games, and bye-bye second.

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Anaheim Ducks traded forwards Peter Holland and Brad Staubitz to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday for defenseman Jesse Blacker and two draft picks.

Blacker was a second-round pick by the Maple Leafs in 2009, but never cracked the NHL roster. The 22-year-old defenseman spent the past two years with the AHL's Toronto Marlies, scoring 11 points in 61 games last season.

The Ducks receive a 2014 third-round pick that could become a second-round pick under certain conditions. Anaheim also reacquired its 2014 seventh-round pick, originally sent to Toronto in a trade for David Steckel.

Yeah, the Bernier trade involved either the 2014 or 2015 2nd round draft pick, but when Holland's GP condition was met Anaheim received the Leafs 2014 pick and so LA had to take the 2015 one.

3 straight, and 4 out of 5. Despite how poorly they've done, the Leafs have done an exceptional job of subtracting picks or prospects through trades rather than adding them.

Wow... what else do you say?  It's no wonder the team is in such a sad state.

I didn't include the one with 2 first round picks because I figured that made up for it in that draft.

Yes the pick traded along with Frattin and Scrivens to LA was conditional on Leafs choosing to use their 2014 or 2015 pick.  Once the 2014 pick was used on Holland, it had to become the 2015 pick that went to LA (and then Columbus).

If only they didn't waste it to move up to draft a 3rd round calibre talent . . .

Also, that draft wasn't one of the 3 straight where they didn't/don't have a 2nd round pick.

He started the season with 16 points in 14 games (Crouse has 23 on the season).  Since then he has put up 74 points in 28 games.  He's a guy that might benefit from an additional year of junior hockey for size alone, so if the Leafs are going full-rebuild, that might not be a bad option.

Rantanen really impressed me at the World Juniors, but I honestly don't know enough about him outside of the tournament if the Leafs are still sitting in the 8-12 spot.  I'm not a big fan of Pavel Zacha.  A lot of good things in his game, he certainly has the size, but I feel like there is something missing in his game that is going to prevent him from being that #1 guy.
