2016-17 Centennial Leafs General Team Discussion

After 10 games we're starting to get a clearer picture of what we have with the Centennial version of our Leafs team.

Here's my 10 game evaluation:

FORWARDS:

Tyler Bozak D
Not gonna give him an F because he was good early, but he doesn't deserve the A he's currently wearing and his play of late has been incredibly lacklustre. As a vet he simply has to be better.

Connor Brown B-
Cudos to him for working his way up the lineup, scoring a goal early on, doing solid work on the PK and fighting hard in the corners. But he has an extra gear and I have only seen flashes of the rookie that came up for seven games last season.

Seth Griffith C
Not much to say yet.  I can see why he was grabbed of waivers and has shown some good bursts of occasional speed and a good work ethic, but he has yet to contribute anything by way of offence.

Peter Holland F
He didn't make anything of his opportunity thus far this season, was terrible on the PK and failed to convert for a single goal, despite having 11 attempts at the net and a shootout opportunity.

Zach Hyman C
He's a replacement player playing way above his head.  What do you expect?  Someone else deserves an opportunity with Matthews and Nylander.

Nazem Kadri A-
He's taken his role to heart this season and doing everything Babcock is asking of him for the most part and doing it well against other teams' top lines. At the 10 game mark he has 8 points and a polar opposite 23.8 SH% to his first ten games last season. But he doesn't get a solid A grade because his faceoffs have taken a dip.

Leo Komarov B-
He is being successful in the shutdown role alongside Kadri but is struggling to get anything going offensively.  Uncle Leo has more to give.

Mitch Marner B+
He's gonna be a star in this league and his playmaking skills, work ethic and IQ are truly next level, but he has to get away from JVR and Bozak. They are dragging him down some.

Matt Martin C+
He's much better than Orr and McLaren combined and playing his role well.  He has come as advertised and is good on the PK but has yet to impress.

Auston Matthews A-
After exploding onto the NHL scene by setting an NHL record with 4 goals in his debut, his game is quieted down as the season has progressed and is in a bit of a cold streak right now.  But he's shown to be everything we'd hoped he'd be thus far.  He was getting protected minutes in his four goal debut.  He isn't anymore as his line now leads nightly amongst forwards in TOI.

Milan Michalek F
His NHL game died along with his alleged demands for top line minutes.  Crashed and burned on Kadri's line and buried in the AHL, his NHL jersey number handed to a 4th liner.

William Nylander A+
He's a beaut on Matthews wing! He definitely had an NHL summer and he has grown his game at every level since last spring.  Keep it up Willy!

Ben Smith B-
Solid on the dot and on the PK. Proving to be an upgrade on Holland thus far and has even converted for a goal of his own.

James van Reimsdyk D
His game is not even close to where it needs to be.  Like Bozak he looked good early but as the season has progressed, his nightly effort hasn't been nearly up to snuff.  Much higher expectations for a vet of his calibre.  Shape up or ship out!

Next up... Leafs D and G

GO LEAFS GO!!!

Defence:

Connor Carrick  B
He's playing very solid hockey in the 4-6 role. Just one point to his name so far this season, but even so, is the only player on the team with a positive +/- rating.  Impressive given the team is at a -8 goal differential currently.

Frank Corrado NR
The waiting game continues...

Jake Gardiner B
Still making questionable hockey IQ defensive plays but doing so less frequently.  Leads the D core currently with 6 points.

Matt Hunwick F
Robidas island looks good on him this season and so would losing the A for good if he comes back. Good person, vet leader, work ethic or not, there is NOTHING redeeming about how his play has been this season.

Martin Marincin C+
Looks to be starting to develop a solid Gunnarsson type game and that is a good thing if it can continue in that direction.

Roman Polak C
Not the tire fire on D that some like to make him out to be.  He has been useful in the role he has been asked to do.

Morgan Rielly B
More defensively responsible but doesn't seem to be able to carry the puck through the neutral zone and gain the O zone with the poise and regularity of last season yet, but he did a wonderful job with Kadri in shutting down McDavid and that is no easy feat, so the more he can do things like that, the more well rounded his game becomes.  Nice hockey smile now, too.

Nikita Zaitsev B
He was stuck with the Hunwick syndrome in the early going of the season but that isn't on him. He's been another player that Shannyco was able to acquire that has come as advertised.  Now he just has to solidify his spot in the top 4.

Goaltending:

Frederik Andersen C
Really struggled early but has really upped his game in the bottom half of the first ten.  Let's hope the trend continues as he has started to look like he does have the potential to justify his contract.

Jonas Enroth D
He may just be in the backup role, but he needs to allow less than 4 goal per game average when he does, regardless of where the majority of the blame is placed. All teams experience defensive breakdowns. NHL calibre goalies find a way.

UP NEXT - Coaching, Management and overall team evaluation.

I didn't want to start a new thread giving overall thoughts about the Leafs so I'll just put this here.

It finally feels like fun to watch the Leafs play again.  The last few seasons have just been a pain to endure, and many nights I didn't even bother tuning in because I knew what to expect.  This organization has built up a nice young core of talent that only looks to get better as the years go on.  There's finally a group here that you can actually envision being top players in the league someday.  That hasn't happened for the Leafs in forever.

Sure there's still gaping holes, especially on defense, but overall the direction of the team is SO encouraging.  As long as the management team continue to draft and develop well, and looking at the success of the Marlies it seems like that is well on it's way, then the Leafs might be a top team for years and years to come.  I want the time to come when it's a given that the Leafs are a playoff team, and the only question in fans minds are "do we have enough to compete for a Cup this year?".  I believe the program they have in place will lead to this very soon.  I'm just glad that this is finally happening in my lifetime.

How many D do we actually need?  2?  Neilson is looking like he has the potential to be a stud (Lets at least hope so) and there is still a chance for Trouba.  Hell, we have enough prospects and a decent pick in the cupboard to land him. Especially after we trade Bozak for a 2nd and JVR for a first.

You know what would be nice to see here?

If everyone here banded together and just enjoyed this nice little winning streak the Leafs have put together while it lasts.

Stop watching for the impending doom that may or may not happen.

One of the best things about this board is that it's always accommodated all manner of discussions and opinions.

If everyone did any one thing it would get pretty boring.

That's not at all what I meant.

There are still certain players on certain lines that I don't like and am happy to discuss the reasons as to why.

I'm talking about actually, maybe enjoying the little successes the Leafs achieve this season.

Here's one for you. What is the longest winning streak do you think the Leafs will endure this season?

Good for you. My suggestion is you talk about those things and don't worry too much if other people want to talk about other things.

You are not an authority on what other people enjoy or how they enjoy it. People's posts on this board do not reflect the totality of their emotional reaction. Most people are capable of conflicting thoughts on something as broad as the team's season. Some are even capable of having conflicting thoughts on any particular topic relating to it.

Give it a shot sometime. Most matters aren't absolutes.

I don't know.

I'm gonna guess six games.

BTW, suggesting we band together when it comes to hoping our team actually can maintain the WC spot it currently occupies isn't a bad thing.

Not for the team. Not for the rebuild.

I'm not exactly sure what you're trying for here. Are you saying that "banding together" on a webboard will actually make some sort of difference in the team's success, or just that it will be more gratifying to have a unifying opinion that matches yours?

I'll be honest, if everyone thought the way I did, I wouldn't even bother coming to the site....

What people might hope for and what people think will happen based on looking at the numbers(or for whatever reason) are two separate subjects. The board has room for both.

I'm sure it won't come as a surprise to you that I don't agree that a WC berth, or even a serious flirtation with one, would be good for the long term goals of the team.

But why care either way? We disagree on that question. It's probably fair to say that neither of us are going to change our mind on the subject so why does it change things for you that not everyone agrees with what you think is good for the team?

I think he just means that instead of our conversations mostly focusing on when (and how hard) the Leafs will start to suck again, perhaps a new direction will emerge with posters accentuating more positives than negatives than in past years. Maybe some of our back-and-forth will shine some light on the idea that the Leafs may have genuinely turned a corner this year. Maybe, just maybe this club may be worthy of some love in our discussions on this forum? Did he say that?  I dunno. Maybe I'm reading him all wrong  ;)

The board's always had people who are positive about the club and say it's turned the corner regardless of whether or not it's true. Again, there's room for all of it.
